MoveToTacoma.com was featured in Forbes. ✨

🏙️ The article talks about MovetoTacoma.com creator Marguerite Martin’s work as “the only truly remote job in real estate,” but what it really gets into is how running a small business rooted in community creates what the reporter called “civic credibility.”

If you’ve followed Move to Tacoma for a while, you know it is not a traditional real estate business only centered around buying and selling houses.

📍🎙️ The neighborhood guide, blog, videos, and podcast are focused on the local community for sure. But it’s also about the constant dance of reconciling some of the big contradictions inherent in the housing industry- especially where those bump up against community values, politics, and even ethics.

The goal is to try to navigate those tensions on the podcast by interviewing local leaders, showing up in conversations that aren’t tied to traditional home transactions, and building something useful for the community while (at the business level) promoting an unusual product: an introduction. 🤝

I’m Marguerite, a real person, and I run MoveToTacoma.com. I started the site 10 years ago to help people figure out where they might want to live in Tacoma, whether from across town or across the world. It’s full of neighborhood guides, podcasts, videos, and interviews with locals.

What I do:
✨ Help people moving to (or within) Tacoma get a real sense of what it’s like here. Sometimes that means creating content myself, but often it’s amplifying the voices of other folks in town so newcomers can follow Tacomans who inspire them.

✨ Connecting those people with local real estate agents who actually know the neighborhoods, schools, restaurants, and communities. (I earn a finder’s fee from agents when a match leads to a closing.)

🏳️‍🌈 These days, many people I talk to are moving to Tacoma under stressful circumstances (often leaving states where life has become more difficult) hoping the Pacific Northwest will offer them something better. Being part of helping them navigate that transition has been a privilege, and it’s what makes all the challenges of being a person on the internet worth it.

Tacoma has changed a lot and with change comes both opportunity and challenge facing cities across the country. Growth has meant rising prices, gentrification, and tough conversations about what kind of city we want to be. I have tried and will keep trying to keep Move to Tacoma a place where we wrestle with different facets of that honestly.

Some basics about me:

🏡 I’ve lived in over a dozen neighborhoods in and around Tacoma in my 46 years.
📍 Right now, I live in Downtown Tacoma (the place I’ve lived the most as an adult).
💡 I’m endlessly fascinated by neighborhoods, local businesses, and communities.

As I work on new articles, podcasts, and videos for the site, I’m especially interested in:
➡️ local businesses
➡️ labor
➡️ civil rights
➡️ anti-racism
➡️ immigrant rights
➡️ how regular people here are making it all work

💡 If you’re moving to Tacoma, or just curious about this place, I hope this account is useful to you.

In this week’s episode of the Move to Tacoma podcast, Marguerite Martin interviewed @uwtacoma Chancellor Sheila Edwards Lange and Associate Vice Chancellor for Social Mobility Amanda Figueroa about the value of attending college in this new era of AI.

The conversation covered:

🤖 Degrees in the Age of AI: The value of college in these modern times and what it means to get a university education in the age of AI.

💰The cost of college: the cost of attending UWT and how the University is working hard to make it so 100% of their UWT Graduates graduate without debt.

💼 Social Mobility - A big part of the conversation focuses on social mobility and how access to education, professional networks, and career opportunities can change not just an individual’s economic circumstances, but the trajectory of an entire family.

🎙️ Watch the full conversation on the Move to Tacoma YouTube channel, listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you podcast!

UW Tacoma was established with the understanding that the university and the community could grow together. Students would gain access to education and careers, while the city would benefit from a more educated workforce, new economic activity, and stronger connections between institutions and residents.

Living in Tacoma in the fall is great, but this year in particular was SUPER nice.

#movetotacoma #tacomawa #tacomawashington #tacomarealestateagent by @movetotacoma

🎙️New Episode! When the @uwtacoma (University of Washington Tacoma) was established 35 years ago, its location in downtown Tacoma was intentional.

The idea was that bringing a university into the city would do more than expand access to higher education. It would also contribute to economic development, create opportunities for local residents, and help strengthen the surrounding community.

In the latest episode of the Move to Tacoma Podcast, host Marguerite Martin talks with UW Tacoma Chancellor Sheila Edwards Lange and Associate Vice Chancellor for Social Mobility Amanda Figueroa about how that vision is playing out today.

A big part of the conversation focuses on social mobility:

📈What does it actually mean for someone to have the opportunity to improve their economic circumstances?

🎓How does education help people build not just better-paying careers, but more choices about how they want to live their lives?

They discuss the importance of professional networks, the challenges of paying for college, why so many UW Tacoma students are the first in their families to earn a four-year degree, and how education can change the trajectory of an entire family.

This fall has been so beautiful. I know that we have to set the clocks back this weekend and move from “Crispy Lovely Fall” into “Dark Rainy Fall” but wow it has been one for the record books so far.

Pierce Transit is on the November ballot asking for a 0.3% sales tax to nearly double local bus service for local riders.

Things like:

No more hour-long weekday waits.
Real Sunday service.
Buses back in Northeast Tacoma.

We’re so lucky to have @thegrandcinema in Downtown Tacoma. I went tonight to see Nathan Fielders new documentary “You Can See Everything” and there was not an empty seat in the theater.

It was one of the first showings in town and it was great to see it with a bunch of people where laughing, gasping in shock, etc. I didn’t know anyone there and I saw it by myself but I felt like I saw it with a bunch of friends. The Grand is great that way.

For me a walk from Old Town in Ruston to Dune Park takes an hour. It’s about 3 miles. I had a good walk tonight with my niece and I was thinking about how many great walks I’ve had alone and with friends along Ruston over the years.

And then to see so many others out there walking alone, gabbing, talking through a problem with a friend, getting their exercise in, whatever. People like me who’ve been coming down here our whole lives (I even worked at The Ram in high school 🫣) and people who’ve moved to Tacoma and found out about it for themselves. It’s great.

Tacoma Fall is kicking into its full glory. We’re at my favorite point where there’s these glorious sunny days but I can still wear a sweater and the leaves are turning crunchy and bright.

If a lifetimes worth of memories is correct, at some point in the next few weeks we will have a fierce rainstorm where everyone’s roofs, basements, and current drainage strategies will be fully tested. Then daylight savings will kick in and the crisp pretty fall will turn into dark rainy fall.

For this moment though it’s just amazing. I’m getting all the walks in. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets, gorgeous trees around every corner, and warm outerwear that doesn’t have any goretex in it. It’s the little things. 🍂🍁

A while back I did a whole instagram story about #lodgelife and threatened to do a whole series on Lodges of the Pacific Northwest within Driving Distance of Tacoma. I LOVE STAYING IN LODGES WITH FIREPLACES, especially as we are finally entering Tacoma Fall aka cozy season.

For this trip I met up with a friend for a Sunday night stay at Alderbrook. This isn’t an ad or anything we just did this for fun so I’ll tell you that for a Sunday night stay it cost about $250 for a double queen and (at least for our stay) it was SO QUIET Sunday evening and Monday during the day. The frolicking children had returned to their studies and it was relaxing and quiet.

They normally have two cats in the lodge Alder and Brook but I heard Alder got hit by a car which is so sad. Truthfully Brook seemed pretty happy and was running around the place getting pets and treats and seemed like they were adjusting pretty well.

When I go I like to eat in the restaurant, vibe by the campfire, takes soak in the hot tub and walk along the dock. I’ve done the hiking trails a time or two and of course there are lots and lots of fun sights to see along the Hood Canal and in the national parks nearby but for this quick trip we just ate well and soaked in the vibes.

I left at 10am on Sunday and was home by 3pm on Monday and it was an incredibly restorative little reset. RECOMMEND.

Again this isn’t an ad I make money when people ask me to find them a real estate agent when they move to Tacoma so my journalistic integrity remains intact.
