POSTS STORIES REELS

When New York City basketball legends are mentioned, Hoegie Simmons deserves to be part of the conversation.

Tucson basketball legend and former NBA All-Star Lafayette “Fat” Lever once shared a remarkable story about Hoegie's reputation reaching far beyond Arizona.

While working as an NBA scout, Fat found himself in a conversation with another scout from New York about legendary playground basketball players.

The New York scout asked Fat if he'd ever heard of Hoegie Simmons.

Fat knew him well.

The scout went on to tell Fat that Hoegie was every bit as good as the celebrated playground legends who had built New York City's iconic streetball culture.

Ponder on that for a second.

New York City, a basketball mecca that produced some of the greatest playground legends in history, had people who knew about a 5'7" phenom from Tucson, Arizona.

That's how far Hoegie's reputation traveled.

However, when measuring basketball greatness through accomplishments at the high school, college and NBA levels, two names stand above everyone else in Tucson basketball history.

Sean Elliott and Lafayette “Fat” Lever.

Their extraordinary achievements, longevity and contributions to the game place them in a different stratosphere.

But basketball history also has room for extraordinary talents whose legends were forged outside the professional spotlight.

And Hoegie Simmons was one of them.

The best-kept secret of Southwest playground folklore.

Before Paula Dotson became a basketball star, Hoegie Simmons showed her what was possible on the court.

Their connection began at the Santa Rosa Recreation Center in Tucson, Arizona, where Hoegie's legendary reputation preceded him.

One afternoon, while Paula and a group of neighborhood kids were playing basketball, Hoegie showed up. The children challenged him to a game.

All of them against him.

What followed was a basketball clinic none of them would forget.

“I swear Hoegie didn't miss a shot that day against us or the grown men who played after us,” Paula recalled. “I had never seen anything like that on the court.”

Hoegie's regular appearances at Santa Rosa became a source of inspiration for Paula. Watching him dismantle opponents with extraordinary skill and seemingly flawless shooting precision helped fuel her own basketball dreams.

“He was just incredible,” Paula remembered. “He made me believe that anything was possible on the court if you worked hard enough.”

For all the stories surrounding Hoegie's complicated life, moments like these reveal another part of his legacy.

A basketball prodigy whose brilliance inspired the next generation, sometimes without him even realizing it.

Some basketball chemistry never fades, no matter how many years pass.

During his five-year tenure as head basketball coach at Sunnyside High School in Tucson, Arizona, Delano Price occasionally called upon his lifelong friend and former backcourt partner, Hoegie Simmons, to join his players for scrimmages.

What followed was a glimpse into Tucson basketball history.

The same backcourt that helped lead Tucson High School to the 1969 Arizona State Championship would reunite on the practice court, leaving a new generation of players mesmerized by their chemistry.

“He'd walk in like it was nothing and we'd be out there going to work like any other time on the court,” Delano recalled with a laugh.

For the Sunnyside players, many of whom hadn't even been born when Delano and Hoegie won their championship, it was an opportunity to witness the legendary duo firsthand.

“They were unstoppable,” recalled Marc Johnson, one of Delano's standout players who would eventually play professional basketball in France.

Different decade. Different gymnasium.

Same legendary backcourt.

The years had passed, but their basketball instincts, chemistry and understanding of one another remained intact.

For those fortunate enough to witness those scrimmages, the stories they'd heard about Delano Price and Hoegie Simmons suddenly became a living reality.

That's the legacy of The Backcourt.
