#MondayWanderlust staying local this time of year: late October brings a bit of autumn color (unexpectedly for those who aren’t from here) to the middle of Tucson’s Sonoran Desert setting—in the city’s Santa Catalina mountain backyard, up above the saguaros, aspens and maple mingle with the evergreens between 8000’ and the 9171ft/2795m peak of Mt. Lemmon… These scenes were taken yesterday in and near Summerhaven—go NOW; wind has already blown a lot of the leaves away and rainy weather is heading in later this week…

After a storm like this, Mount Lemmon feels alive.

In the past 24 hours, more than four inches of rain fell near the top of the mountain, with somewhat lower totals around Mount Lemmon Lodge. For a mountain community that knows all too well the challenges of limited water supplies, and the water restrictions that can come with them, this monsoon season has been an extraordinary gift.

All that rain is doing more than replenishing the mountain’s water supply. It’s putting on quite a show.

Near the summit, normally quiet drainages have become rushing streams and tumbling creeks, weaving their way through the forest and over granite ledges. As the water gathers momentum farther down the mountain, those small flows converge into something spectacular: Seven Cataracts Falls, cascading through the rugged Santa Catalina Mountains on its journey toward Sabino Canyon and the desert below.

It’s one of those remarkable moments when you can actually watch the mountain move water—from the cool forests above Summerhaven all the way toward the Sonoran Desert.

The monsoon doesn’t just change the landscape. Sometimes, it reminds us how connected every part of this mountain really is.

Have you ever seen Seven Cataracts flowing like this?

Whether you’re casting a line, enjoying a picnic, taking in the cool mountain air, or simply relaxing by the water, it’s an easy way to slow down and enjoy the Sky Island lifestyle.

And really… does a day in the mountains get much better than this?

What’s your favorite way to spend a day on Mt. Lemmon? Fishing, hiking, picnicking, birding, biking, or just finding a quiet spot with a view? 👇

Make a weekend of it and stay a little closer to all the mountain fun at Mount Lemmon Lodge. Stay Elevated. Leave Elevated.

You never know who you might meet on the mountain. 🐻🌲

While this handsome black bear was photographed elsewhere in Arizona, it’s a great reminder of the incredible wildlife that calls our state home… including the bears that inhabit the forest of Mt. Lemmon.

spotting a bear in the wild is always exciting, but remember to admire them from a safe distance, never approach or feed them, and always give a wildlife plenty of room to move along.
Up here among the pines, it’s easy to forget the Sonoran desert is just a winding drive below, and, you never know what you might encounter along the way.

Have you ever spotted a bear here on Mt. Lemmon? If so, where were you?

Elevation changes everything.

The Catalina Highway climbs from the Sonoran Desert into a completely different Arizona—past towering rock formations, sweeping overlooks and changing ecosystems before reaching the pine forests of Mt. Lemmon.

Along the way, stop at places like Windy Point and Seven Cataracts, then keep climbing toward Summerhaven, where every season brings something different to the mountain.

Come for the drive. Stay for everything waiting at the top. Mount Lemmon Lodge - Stay Elevated. Leave Elevated.
