One of the encounters during the exploration of Printmaking Experiment last Saturday. Tahnia Ahista was warmly welcomed by Ai (Aunt) Elizabeth Djuen at her residence, Salon Yunita, which has been established since 1973. During their conversation, Ai Elizabeth shared stories about her home on Jalan Merpati, Krembangan, before the revitalization of the Old Town area by the city government, as well as memories of several household objects from the early years of her marriage. These personal histories and everyday objects became part of Tahnia’s exploration. For this experiment, she will use objects belonging to Ai Elizabeth as the starting point for her printmaking process. Thank you to Ai Elizabeth Djuen for her warm welcome and for sharing these stories with us. — *Printmaking Experiment* Exploration | 31 October 2026 Exhibition | 21–28 November 2026 AKSERA Jalan Dukuh Kupang XXVI No. 20 Surabaya n0lkecil and AKSERA by @n0lkecil
A glimpse into the exploration behind our program Printmaking Experiment. Walking through the streets of Jalan Kasuari, Surabaya, participating artists encountered and collected objects from their surroundings, considering the unexpected possibilities they might hold within printmaking practices. Each finding opened up a different direction for experimentation. These encounters mark the beginning of a process to translate found materials into new artistic possibilities. Thank you to all participating artists for being part of this exploration. Printmaking Experiment Exploration 31 October 2026 Exhibition 21 - 28 November 2026 n0lkecil and AKSERA by @n0lkecil
The exhibition Traces has come to a close. Thank you to the artists, collaborators, and everyone who visited and supported the exhibition. n0lkecil is now temporarily closed as we take a short pause before what comes next. We look forward to welcoming you again in November. by @n0lkecil
n0lkecil and AKSERA Surabaya are pleased to present a collective print experiment bringing together 8 artists working across printmaking practices. Beginning with a walk through the streets around Jl. Kasuari, Surabaya, the program invites artists to encounter and collect objects that hold unexpected artistic possibilities. These found objects become points of departure for experimentation. Moving between print, material, and object, each artist explores how something encountered in the city might be translated into a new artistic form. Through individual approaches to printmaking, the program opens a shared space for testing the boundaries of the medium and reconsidering the relationship between an object and the image it produces. The resulting works will be presented in an exhibition at AKSERA Surabaya, followed by a public talk bringing together a writer and participating artists to reflect on their processes and the possibilities that emerge when printmaking begins with an encounter. — Exploration Saturday, 31 October 2026 Jl. Tomorrow marks the final three days of Traces, a group exhibition featuring Kae Oktorina, Kexin Hong, and Tahnia Ahista. Traces explores how histories, memories, bodily experiences, and our relationships with nature and technology move across different mediums. In these processes of transmission, nothing remains entirely intact: something is lost, distorted, or interrupted, while something else persists as a trace. Rather than seeking to recover what has passed in its entirety, Traces invites us to attend to what remains ;ong after they have departed from their point of origin. Kexin Hong’s practice explores the entanglement of place, memory, and trauma through embodied experience and the fragments of personal and collective histories. In Between Silence and Home22, Surabaya becomes a space where memory is both encountered and unsettled, as Tiong Ang’s return to the city reveals the fragility of personal recollection and the lingering presence of historical trauma. Through moments of uncertainty, bodily gestures, and encounters with places tied to the past, the film traces what remains when memory falters and words fall silent. Kexin Hong residency in Surabaya was hosted by Rentang Art Lab @ren___tang Kexin Hong (born China) is a multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker based in Amsterdam. Her artistic practice spans various media—from moving images, installations, and essay films—as she explores the psychosocial and political forces that shape human perceptions of reality. by @n0lkecil
Tahnia Ahista’s practice explores the body through intimate objects, inherited materials, and the traces they leave behind. Working with photolithography and blind printing, she considers how experiences of the female body can be inscribed through pressure, touch, memory, and the everyday. Tahnia Ahista is a printmaker based in Surakarta whose works explore the intimate details of life and shifting perceptions of the female body. Her creative process is rooted in a reflection on puberty, including physical changes and the introduction to feminine clothing, in order to reflect the complex identity of women. by @n0lkecil
Kae Oktorina’s practice explores the shifting relationship between nature, perception, and technology. Through light, electronic remnants, and constructed organic forms, her works create moments where the artificial begins to resemble the living, inviting us to reconsider how nature is encountered through technological mediation. Kae Oktorina is a Jakarta based new media artist. Through various mediums, she explores how color can fill space, transform over time, and alter perception. By utilizing optical principles, imaging technology, and material experiments, her works create sensory experiences that reveal phenomena beyond the reach of ordinary vision. by @n0lkecil
A glimpse into the workshop inspired by Kae Oktorina’s Petals From the Past. Working with discarded cables, electronic components, plastic fragments, light, and other technological remnants, participants explored how organic forms might emerge from materials that were once considered waste.Thank you to everyone who joined us and to Kae Oktorina for sharing her practice with us. We had the pleasure of welcoming everyone for the opening of Traces, featuring Kae Oktorina, Kexin Hong, and Tahnia Ahista, followed by a performance by Aika Takeuchi, Yukari Ono, and Toyol Dolanan Nuklir. The evening brought together the exhibition, sound, movement, and encounters between artists, audiences, and the space. Thank you to Aika Takeuchi, Yukari Ono, and Toyol Dolanan Nuklir for the performance, and to everyone who joined us for the opening. Also, thank you to everyone who supported and be part of our collaborator. Traces Kae Oktorina Kexin Hong Tahnia Ahista 10 September – 25 October 2026 Jalan Jambi No. 35, Darmo Surabaya by @n0lkecil
Traces is now showing at Project 101 - n0lkecil, bringing together new and recent works by Kae Oktorina, Kexin Hong, and Tahnia Ahista. The exhibition brings together video, printmaking, found materials, light, and modified technological objects across the gallery space. Moving between intimate bodily experiences, fragments of memory, and encounters with nature through technological mediation, the works take different forms while sharing an attention to what remains from an experience. Kexin Hong presents Between Silences, a video work developed through her research into the memories of a Chinese-Indonesian diaspora who left Surabaya for the Netherlands in 1965. Tahnia Ahista presents printmaking made through photolithography and blind printing, drawing from an inherited bra and the marks it leaves upon the body. Kae Oktorina works with a modified monitor, polarizing filters, light, and organic forms to construct an artificial encounter with nature from technological remnants. Together, the works occupy the gallery as fragments of different encounters—held in images, surfaces, objects, bodies, and light. As part of Traces, n0lkecil presents a workshop led by Kae Oktorina This workshop invites participants to explore the possibility of creating plant-like forms from discarded technological materials. Cables, plastic fragments, electronic components, and other remnants of technology will be transformed into sculptural plants. Through an experimental process of cutting, assembling, and arranging materials, participants will explore how leaves, flowers, light, and shadows can be reimagined through something artificial. Rather than reproducing nature, the workshop asks how our perception of the organic might be reconstructed through the remains of technology. Participants will create their own sculptural plants and encounter the strange space between the living and the artificial. Kae Oktorina, is Indonesian media artist whose practice investigates color as a material rather than merely a visual property. Working across installation, moving image, sculpture, and experimental technologies, she explores how color can occupy space, transform over time, and alter perception. Drawing from optics, imaging technologies, and material experimentation, her work creates sensory experiences that reveal phenomena beyond ordinary vision.
