This is an icon of the Virgin Eleusa (Virgin of Tenderness, also called the Sweet-Kissing or Glykophilousa) by iconographer Nadine Dib. This icon was painted as per the ancient traditional Byzantine technique using egg tempera, wine & natural pigments. It features the Virgin Mary holding her son, baby Jesus— usually on her right side & refers to the “Mother of God”, in her capacity for tenderness & compassion. Her face drowns in a soft, caressing light, radiating love for Baby Jesus, whom she carefully embraces in her arms to give to the salvation of people. Baby Jesus responds to the caress, gently pressing back His cheek to that of His mother’s offering us a beautiful representation of an affectionate mother-son embrace. These icons are also a larger symbol for the Virgin Mary’s similar compassion and protectiveness towards all mankind.

This is an icon of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, the Great Martyr, painted by iconographer Nadine Dib. Painted per the ancient traditional Byzantine technique using egg tempera, holy water, wine, natural pigments, 24k gold leaf. Saint Catherine lived in Alexandria in the early 4th century, born into a noble family & renowned for her beauty & wisdom. She vowed to marry only a man who surpassed her in nobility, wealth & knowledge — until a vision of the Theotokos & the Christ Child revealed that her true Bridegroom was Christ Himself, who bound her to Him in a mystical betrothal. When Emperor Maxentius sent fifty learned philosophers to refute her faith, Catherine's wisdom converted them all instead. Enraged, he condemned her to die upon a spiked wheel, but it shattered at her touch — origin of the "Catherine wheel" — & she was beheaded for her faith. Tradition holds that angels carried her body to Mount Sinai, where the Monastery of Saint Catherine stands today. Here, she is shown in royal garments fit for her noble birth, crowned, holding the martyr's cross in one hand & resting the other on the wheel of her martyrdom — a saint of royal blood & unshakable faith, patroness of scholars, philosophers & all who seek wisdom through Christ.

This is an icon of Saint Joseph with Baby Jesus by iconographer Nadine Dib. This icon blending both western & eastern tradition was painted as per the ancient traditional Byzantine technique using egg tempera, wine, holy water & natural pigments. It features Saint Joseph carrying Baby Jesus in his arms while holding a white lily— the traditional symbol of his purity, chastity, & unwavering fidelity as the chosen guardian of the Holy Family. As foster father & earthly protector of Christ, Saint Joseph embodies quiet strength, humility & devoted service, entrusted with raising & safeguarding the Son of God. His tender embrace of the Child reflects a father's love expressed through duty, sacrifice & unshaken faith. This icon stands as a reminder of Saint Joseph's role as patron & protector of families, workers & the universal Church.

Iconography is one of the oldest sacred arts in the world — and it still has the power to change & heal you.
For centuries, men & women have sat before a blank board — many of them beginners, many of them uncertain. Through pigments, silence & prayer, they brought forth something that transcended their own hands.
This summer, we're opening that same journey to complete beginners.
You don't need artistic skills. You don't need to have all your theology sorted. You need only to show up & open your heart.
Week by week, you'll learn the traditional technique: egg tempera, natural pigments, gold leaf, the sacred geometry of the face & the theology behind every gesture & color. But what our students tell us, again and again, is that the real work happens somewhere deeper. The icon forms on the board. Something else forms within & comes alive.
