Ya girl is 30, chile! Wow, wow, wow. There is no cute or tidy way to sum up my 20s. They were a bounty of experiences. Electrifying, heartbreaking, and illuminating. I evolved in ways I never could have imagined, and every version of myself served a purpose, guiding me to where I am today. I began my 20s by moving to NYC alone, running headfirst toward my dream of becoming an actor. Ten years later, I am still here, and I am a working actor. My inner child is grinning because she knew her belief in herself would set ablaze a path to wherever she wanted to go. I have been harnessing that little girl’s bravery ever since.

The journey has not been easy, but maybe that’s the point? Ease can be a threat to growth. I am grateful for every lesson and every season that stretched me. In particular, this last year has taught me to be content with exactly where my feet are. God has truly blessed me. I will continue to do the work and leave a trail of light and fairy dust behind me ;)

10 years ago today, I got on a Megabus and moved from Portland, Maine to NYC. I had never lived on my own, had very little in my savings, 0 credit score, and no clue how to ride the NYC subway LOL. But what I did know was that my dreams were worth chasing. So much life has happened since then. The wins, the losses, the friendships made, and the lessons learned.

As a child, I was obsessed with watching Nigerian Nollywood films. I wanted to do what the actors on screen were doing: storytelling! There was something so dynamic and immersive about it to me.

When my family immigrated to America, I was introduced to theater. The moment I first set foot on a stage in middle school drama club, I was LOCKED IN (Shoutout to my drama teacher Ms. Klein from Cathedral School). Acting gave me purpose by providing a pathway to be of service to others, something my very Catholic parents always preached about. Though they envisioned a more conventional career path for me, they came to understand and support my passion for the craft, especially after seeing me perform.

I started telling my family and friends that I would one day move to NYC to pursue acting. I truly believe I manifested the life I once dreamed of, but dreams don’t prepare you for what it takes to make them a reality. The sacrifices, the setbacks, and the moments that test your belief in yourself. 20-year-old me in this photo had no idea what was ahead.

I’m so grateful God has covered me through it all. It’s easy to focus on how far we still have to go, but it’s more vital to recognize how far we’ve come!! I’ve accomplished SO much. This gorgeous city has shown ya girl what I’m capable of. Today, I’m choosing to celebrate the woman I’ve become and STILL BECOMING. by @nancyumba

A runway full of ONLY plus-size baddies?! My inner child was SQUEALING with joy!! 😭🥹✨

To see so many gorgeous, unapologetic big bodies taking up space and absolutely OWNING that runway was everything. Representation like this hits different when you know what it feels like to grow up not seeing yourself reflected in fashion.

Thank you @plusbklyn and @fionajanecole for such a memorable night one of #nyfw ❤️ The big baddies are UP!!! And baby, we’re not going anywhere. 💅🏾 #plussize #plussizefashion #plussizestyle #fashion by @nancyumba
