Happy Release Day to IN THE COUNTRY I LOVE by @alaaalbarkawi with @peachtreeteen !!!!!!! Subhanallah I’m so grateful to Allah for allowing this day to arrive and on such an auspicious day 🤲🏽 From the moment I picked up ITCIL 5 years ago, I knew that it would capture the hearts of readers all around the world. The first Iraqi and Shia YA novel that is true and proud. This novel makes every one of us feels seen, no matter who we are or where we come from—or which land we settled in. It is the truest privilege in the world to witness debut author, Alaa Al-Barkawi’s readers discover her and ITCIL. Join me in the most beautiful heartbreak, it’s a wonderful place to heal ❤️‍🩹 As Alaa’s critique partner, I get to witness every part of her journey, from breakdowns to it all makes sense now! moments and everything in between. That is why I can say: Alaa holds herself to an insanely high bar but you know what? She delivers. Every. Single. Time. From her prose to the intricate layers of each character and the setting and Sky (!!!) to the stakes and themes, every single thing hits and I can’t wait for you to enjoy this heart wrenching story that’s more relevant now that it ever has been before. 🌙✨☁️ ITCIL is an unflinching story centred on Khaled, Yassir, and Kawther as they navigate family bonds, fractured friendships, and the weight of growing up Muslim in a post-9/11 world shaped by fear, expectation, and silence. 2 families once bound by survival... now divided by secrets, distance, and everything left unspoken. A friendship that never fully broke-only shifted under the pressure of becoming who they are. And when violence fractures their world, everything is forced into the light. This story lingers in the quiet in-between spaces-about what it costs to hold onto faith, family, and each other, and what it means to try to rebuild when so much has already been lost. ITCIL is now available at your local US & Canadian bookstore (and if it’s not, go request it!). I recommend ordering it from my fav local bookstore @sabiqounbooks !!! P.S. last slide is real time footage of me and @ban.n.a fangirling over our favorite author 🔥 by @narjiszahraa
I met @alaaalbarkawi when we were both baby writers, desperately learning how to improve our craft and bringing Shia characters to life in our novels. The first time I read In The Country I Love (ITCIL), it changed everything inside me. Literally from the first line of her novel, Alaa had me in tears — yes because that version was even moreso devastating but because I was finally seeing Shia characters on the page. We start the book on Ashura at the Islamic center at Maghrib time. It is the most Shia scene ever and that was only the beginning. Yassir, Khaled, & Kawther are flawed (real) characters who deserve every ounce of love but seldom receive it. With just 1 week until ITCIL comes out, I ask that if you plan to purchase this vital, life-changing novel to please order it before May 26th. The best way to support an author is to contribute to their pre-order sales because these numbers define the next chapter in their journey. The power is in your hands 🙌🏽 If you plan to loan this book from your local library & they don’t have it yet, request them to stock both the physical copy and the e-book! As writers, we love a “show, don’t tell” moment so this is your chance to SHOW your local libraries, bookstores, and everyone that will get to work with her how important & in demand Alaa Al-Barkawi is! ✨✨✨ IN THE COUNTRY I LOVE is about two Iraqi American best friends—a struggling teen father and the community’s golden boy—confront dark truths about their families in the wake of a devastating crime in this heartrending YA debut. Told through multiple POVs across time, this authentic exploration of the Shia Muslim experience in the U.S. seamlessly combines classic YA themes of identity, coming-of-age, and relationships with timely social themes of racism, Islamophobia, and justice. This compelling, contemporary debut is perfect for fans of Sabaa Tahir’s ALL MY RAGE and Markus Zusak’s THE BOOK THIEF. Pre-order link in bio!
