Our dreams have taken flight! What a difference a year makes! Since its first flight on Oct. 28, 2025, NASA’s X-59 has continued pushing the boundaries of aviation. See how far we’ve come in just one year! #NASA #Quesst #x59 by @nasaarmstrong
From the pioneering work of SOFIA’s telescope to today’s flying laboratories, airborne science is at the heart of NASA Armstrong. Our 80th anniversary series explores how aircraft like ER-2s and Gulfstreams collect crucial data on wildfires, glaciers, pollution, minerals, and more to expand our understanding of Earth from above. 🌎✈️ 🔗: https://www.nasa.gov/armstrong/programs-projects/science-projects/ 🎥: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2e0LbR_XtFk by @nasaarmstrong
“For as long as I can remember, I’ve dreamt of doing exactly what I got to do today.” Dream achieved! NASA test pilot Mike Lippert completed his first flight in the X-59 on Oct. 21, becoming the latest pilot to take the controls of NASA's quiet supersonic research aircraft. After months of training and years of flying high-performance aircraft, Lippert finally got the chance to realize a lifelong goal: flying an X-plane. Celebrating a leader who lifts aviation, and all of us, higher! ✈️ 🌟 Huge congrats to NASA research test pilot David “Nils” Larson, winner of the 2026 Iven C. Kincheloe Award from the Society of Experimental Test Pilots for outstanding accomplishment in flight test! From the X-59’s first flight to its first flight reaching Mach 1.4 and an altitude of 55,000 feet, Nils’ groundbreaking work is shaping the future of flight. Congratulations, Nils, on an achievement that inspires the generation of dreamers and doers! 🔗: https://www.nasa.gov/people/david-nils-larson/ 🎥: NASA by @nasaarmstrong
A double birthday celebration! 🎉 @NASA teamed up with @EdwardsAirForceBase in California to honor NASA Armstrong’s 80th anniversary and America’s 250th.   From fun hands-on STEM activities to a NASA flyover with sonic boom and remarks from NASA astronaut Matthew Dominick, Red, White, and Boom was an unforgettable day for the Edwards community. 🇺🇸 ✈️ Explore more about Armstrong’s 80th: https://www.nasa.gov/news-release/nasa-armstrong-celebrates-80-years-of-flight-innovation/ 🎥: NASA by @nasaarmstrong
Welcome home, ER-2! After a three-month deployment to Montana supporting the INSPYRE (INjected Smoke and PYRocumulonimbus Experiment) Earth science campaign, NASA’s high-altitude aircraft is back at Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California. INSPYRE is helping scientists learn how wildfire-generated, smoke-infused clouds lift smoke high into the atmosphere and shape our climate. Fun fact: the ER-2 can soar above 70,000 feet, giving scientists a near-satellite view of Earth! ✈️🌍 Image descriptions: Image 1: NASA’s high-altitude ER-2 aircraft on the ramp at sunrise, with vivid pink and purple clouds filling the sky as ground crew members work nearby.
