Moonlighter Film Camp ⛺️ 🌕

I started working on films a long time before I knew what I was doing. You could say I was flying by the seat of my pants 😅. Every project has been a new learning curve. This camp run by @wearewelltravelled at the @banffcentre was exactly what I have been seeking.

Connection to an amazing community of badass ladies, inspiration and confidence from an incredible facilitation team and knowledge to fill in gaps I haven’t quite figured out how to leap over yet.

Thank you @sarahleesteele and @dina_director for being so generous with your time and knowledge 🙏🏼 and to all the unique, special people I met on this camp thanks for sharing all your awesome ideas, skills and energy.

🎥 If you’re a female identifying filmmaker and you’re looking for something to help you up I really recommend this program! Their next one is in Feb 2027 and will focus on post-production and editing! Application due Nov 10!… I’m working on my application now 😃. by @nat_segal

When people ask me what I’ve been doing for the last few months…… walking, working, weddings, wet backpacking trips and at least one emergency vet visit. We also had a bear viewing party from our kitchen window and got to watch our friends get married ❤️❤️ ( which I took no photos of Laura and Kyle because I was too busy dancing)…. I learned a new love of orange liquor based cocktails, summited ‘Everest’ ( of the Purcell range) on multiple occasions and put my parents to work in the backyard. Officially entered hermit mode for a few weeks. 🤘🏻🍁 thank you everyone that hung out with Kaya this summer 🙏🏼 including my favourite dance partner @jermacjones . by @nat_segal

We’re headed to Teton Valley, the home of @casttouring , for the Girl Winter show in Victor, ID tonight and Jackson Hole, WY tomorrow night!

‘Biscuits’ is all about challenging yourself but the last thing we want to be challenged on is our ski bindings. Using CAST bindings throughout filming was key for the predictability and the versatility of having a tech toe for touring and a traditional pivot for sending.

💅🏻 What’s your favourite colour bindings?

See you all next year ⛰️. I gotta go dust off my skis…. by @nat_segal

The beginning 📍

I often get asked how I started making films. There were some pivotal moments but this camping trip in September 2015 in Australia’s Main Range was one of the core trips that defined the last 10 years of my career.

My sister @anna_segal had just retired from slopestyle skiing after multiple podiums and her Olympic debut and was looking for her next moves. I’d just completed my first ski expedition to Greenland and filming with @shadesofwinter , and was inspired by the women around me making their own film projects.

We decided to collaborate on our own film. We packed our bags ( with way too much stuff), invited then aspiring ski guide @hollyskiwalker across the Pacific and asked some media friends of ours to document a trip to the Main Range in Kosciuszko National Park.

There was so much we got wrong - the weather was crap to the point that the large drone we pulled in on a sled couldn’t fly; Anna and I had no idea what the film was about and just argued; and the food I packed was totally inappropriate for camp cooking 🤣.

However, amongst all the failures were a number of wins - it was our first winter camping trip and we survived; we skied as the sun rose and set in the stunning mountains that make up part of home; and after finishing the trip and fighting for the 10 hour drive home we started to shape the project that would turn into our first film - Finding The Line.

Our film Finding The Line (2018) is going live on YouTube later this week. There’ so many memories from what ended up being a 2-year project that premiered on Red Bull TV and personally changed the trajectory of my life. It wouldn’t have been possible without my sister and all the people that supported us. I’ll tell you more about it in the next post ☺️.
