POSTS STORIES REELS

The Art Quarter - a makeshift cinema for one night only!

Nazo Arts and Projects (L06) in association with Imbewu Collective presents an exclusive screening of The Two Musketeers - a powerful film by innovative storyteller Director Dlamini.

About the film: When reality hits two young boys and they are forced to be in situations that pressure grown men to make unspeakable decisions. When do we as a society realise that we have subjugated innocence? A society were tainting innocence is normalised and glorified as rite of passage. This is more than just a film - this is a conversation about where we come from, where we are, and where our stories are going.

What to expect:

“In the Art Quarter we move like installers of memory — shifting chairs, cables, mirrors into meaning. Here puzzles are played not only on tables but in the spirit of community, each piece joined by invisible labour, each meeting a gathering of home. Nazo! Arts and Projects is not just a gallery, it is a living quarter: where artists and cultural workers stitch together a new commons, where installation becomes kinship, and where the unseen hands of labour turn Sandton into a place of belonging.”

From Installation to Inspiration

When Bafana Zembe was first called to install at The Art Quarter, the task seemed straightforward. Yet, upon engaging with the space, he recognized its deeper potential not just as an art handler, but as an artist in his own right. Returning to install another booth during the same week as the Joburg Art Fair, Zembe embraced the challenge of transforming chaos into coherence.

Choosing the most unconventional corner — scattered with chairs, tables, cables, cushions, and mirrors he declared: “I will make this work. I have an idea.” What followed was a process of moving, sketching, and calling collaborators, some of whom missed the moment. The result: a spontaneous gallery, a testament to turning possibility into presence.

Rather than waiting for others, Zembe infused the space with his own paintings and sculptures, works created during his free time. One piece, Land of My People, became an interactive puzzle of 180 pieces. Visitors were invited to join the fragments together, embodying the philosophy of Ubuntu unity through collective effort. Each puzzle piece symbolized how individuals, when connected, form a greater whole.

This act of engagement transformed the studio into more than a showcase; it became a participatory dialogue between artist and audience, archive and future.

At the prestigious Michelangelo Towers in Sandton, Nazo! Studio at The Art Quarter is redefining what it means to curate, install, and sustain art spaces. Founded by Bafana Zembe / Nazo Arts and Projects, the studio is not only a hub of creativity but also a model of how art can generate income while empowering the spaces it inhabits.

As an art handler, I know the weight of objects not only their fragility, but their testimony. Each canvas, each installation, carries the fingerprints of history. As an artist, I insist that these works are not ornaments but witnesses. They speak where silence has been imposed, they hold memory where forgetting has been forced. At this People’s Tribunal, I stand with the artworks themselves: carriers of truth, handlers of justice, artists of remembrance.” by @nazoartsandprojects
