Representing college students across NC

POSTS STORIES REELS

This weekend at the State Capitol, the North Carolina Student Legislature convened for its 89th Annual Session, bringing together delegates from colleges and universities across the state for a full simulation of the legislative process.

Throughout the weekend, delegates engaged in every stage of lawmaking—caucusing to refine and amend legislation, presenting bills for consideration, and participating in structured floor debate under parliamentary procedure. Through discussion, negotiation, and voting across two chambers, students gained hands-on experience in policy development and the complexities of democratic decision-making.

This year’s session also featured the inaugural Moot Court, where participants argued constitutional and legal questions before a panel of student and professional attorneys, further expanding the academic and practical scope of NCSL.

We were also honored to welcome alumni to observe proceedings and support current delegates, as well as hear from former NCSL Governor and current Field Director for Congressman Richard Hudson, Daniel Dorociak, who shared reflections on leadership and public service.

Special thanks to the former Council of State for their leadership in organizing and executing the Annual Session. In particular, sincere appreciation goes to Lucas Crisp, former Lieutenant Governor, for his work in planning and coordinating the event, and to former Governor Matthew Simonson for his dedication and continued commitment to NCSL. Thank you as well to all Delegate Chairpersons and every delegate who participated.

We also held elections for the 90th Legislative Year Council of State. Congratulations to the newly elected members:
Governor Ashton Weaver — University of North Carolina at Charlotte
Lieutenant Governor Hannah Byers — Campbell University
Secretary of State Bella Lane — Campbell University
Attorney General Brandon Teague — Western Carolina University
Secretary of Public Relations Simona Capatina — Appalachian State University
Treasurer Elijah Cordero — University of North Carolina at Charlotte

We are excited to see what the 90th Legislative Year will hold, and grateful to all those who shaped the 89th! by @ncstudentlegislature

✨ Internship Spotlight Series: Featuring Farah Rahma! ✨

From Wingate University to Paris, France! This week’s Internship Spotlight features Farah Rahma, a senior and Delegation Chairperson at Wingate University, who spent her summer gaining legal experience at a law office in Paris.

During her time abroad, Farah was immersed in the day-to-day work of legal practice. She took on responsibilities ranging from managing client records and legal documentation to drafting petitions, case memos, and court materials. She also worked with judicial deadlines, communicated with judges, law enforcement, and court clerks, and had the opportunity to observe courtroom proceedings firsthand.

For Farah, the experience was also an opportunity to explore whether a career in law was truly the right path for her before attending law school. Working in a professional legal environment strengthened her adaptability, gave her a closer look at legal advocacy, and ultimately confirmed her desire to pursue a legal career.

We love seeing our NCSL delegates take what they learn through the legislature and pursue opportunities across the country — and, in Farah’s case, across the world!

Congratulations, Farah! by @ncstudentlegislature

What a successful weekend!!

On Saturday, 86 delegates from across the state of North Carolina came together to present, debate, and vote on student-authored legislation!

Throughout the Interim Council, delegates conducted organizational business, caucused with their respective parties, presented and debated legislation, and cast their votes on the issues brought before the body. We were also honored to hear from North Carolina Senator Mujtaba A. Mohammed, who joined us as our guest speaker.

From thoughtful debate to collaboration across delegations, this weekend was a great representation of what NCSL is all about: Contention. Civility. Camaraderie.

Thank you to everyone who attended, participated, and helped make this Interim Council such a success. We can’t wait to see everyone again at the next IC! ⚖️🏛️ by @ncstudentlegislature

Twenty-five years later, we remember September 11, 2001.

A day that changed our nation forever, and a day whose loss and sacrifice remain with us.

We remember those who were lost, those who answered the call to serve, and the families and communities who carried the weight of that day.

May we never lose sight of the courage, sacrifice, and quiet acts of compassion that followed. May we continue to honor their memory by serving our communities and caring for one another.

Twenty-five years later, we remember.
We honor.
We will never forget. 🇺🇸 by @ncstudentlegislature
