@utah.valley.university president Astrid S. Tuminez reflects on how students on campus came together in the aftermath of the killing of Charlie Kirk in September. “Listening to them talk about needing conversations with each other, despite their differences, actually moved me to tears,” uvu_president Tuminez told @ndungca at the Global Women’s Summit. by @ndungca

HAPPY

“For me, being Filipino in America is about finding and telling stories from two worlds and holding both sides close. Growing up in a place as diverse as the Bay Area, I know that being Filipino is part of the American identity – our Filipino stories are unique and distinct to our culture, but they also create the fabric of the United States. It’s never about being Filipino or American – I’m always both.

“I feel like the best of my career is still ahead of me.” - Lucy Liu

What an incredible night to have @lucyliu for our fireside chat for the @aajaofficial gala in Seattle ❤️ 🙏

She has played so many rolls in Hollywood including O-Ren Ishii aka Cottonmouth in Kill Bill (one of my favorite all-time characters)

But now, she comes to AAJA starring in her new film @rosemeadfilm - a true life story of a terminally ill Chinese mother grappling with her teenage son’s schizophrenia.

A wonderful and thoughtful conversation led by AAJA National President @ndungca

And a perfect way to tie a bow on our time in the #PNW

victoria dungca died peacefully this week, surrounded by several of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the home where she took care of so many of us.

nanay, as we all called her, moved from quezon city to the bay area with our grandfather and the whole brood in her 50s. she was always busy. she loved lemon drops and fashion, worked as an accountant and bookkeeper, once wrote a community newspaper in english and tagalog for those who immigrated to north america from her hometown. some of us traveled europe by train with her while she was in her late 70s. we added zurich to the itinerary just because she wanted to see it.

she was the definition of a matriarch. she had eight children, fifteen grandchildren, even more great-grandchildren - and she raised us all. nearly all of her grandchildren attended the elementary school near her three-bedroom that was everyone’s second home. she’d walk us home and feed us nilaga and turon when we got there. i’m one of three granddaughters who inherited victoria as a middle name and we’re always trying to live up to that honor. she made it to 102. how lucky we all were to have her in our lives for so long. by @ndungca

reflecting on the past year, and our investigation of the smithsonian’s collection of human remains will stay with me for a long time. it took me to anchorage and seattle with @clurhealy, to the cordilleras in the philippines, to seemingly every archive that exists. thank you to everyone who made this series possible: the families who trusted us to tell their stories, the historians and archivists who helped us uncover the past and the entire team at the post who worked to share this investigation in so many forms. by @ndungca

wrapping up my first year as @aajaofficial president and it has been a whirlwind. proud of everything we’ve accomplished and thankful for all the leaders around me who make this organization as special as it is — especially our executive director @nomie44, our HQ staff, our executive officers and the governing board. we could only do this because of the many people who have stepped up and made this organization strong since it began in 1981. thank you to everyone who has helped lift up AAPI communities in the media.

cheers to the only organization that could inspire me to run my second (and final!) marathon. looking forward to 2024 with my #aajafamily. by @ndungca

a very dungca christmas. happy holidays, all! by @ndungca

couldn’t be prouder of Team AAJA finishing the NYC marathon and raising more than $20,000 for AAJA and its chapters. there were no better running partners than @schick_will @ihatechenny and @what_cz, who all took on their first marathons just for AAJA.

so glad that @frankiebi dreamed up this fundraiser (and ran the marathon!) last year, and that he continued to coach us all, with help from @jinkding and @boyreporter (who ran two years in a row).

thank you to all who cheered us along the route, complete with giant posters of our faces. and thank you to everyone who donated to lift up AAJA and AAPI journalists. your support got me over all those bridges and through all 26.2 miles. by @ndungca

When we told Martha Sara Jack that her cousin’s brain had been taken in 1933 for the Smithsonian Institution’s “racial brain collection,” she was shocked. The family quickly petitioned the National Museum of Natural History for the return of the brain.

Ninety years after it was taken, a Smithsonian official brought the brain to Seattle and relatives buried it in Sara’s grave.

@clurhealy @salwangeorges @joysharonyi and I were able to witness the service and accompany the family throughout their time in Seattle.

We were struck by so many moments during the trip. Sara’s relative, Rachel Twitchell-Justiss, was able to visit the exact spot on a hotel roof where Sara was once photographed, and the cemetery surprised the family by contributing a free headstone that will soon mark Sara’s grave.

Grateful @clurhealy and I could follow this family’s journey and hope you’ll read about it in the Post today. Photos by @salwangeorges, and check out the video by @joysharonyi. by @ndungca

her daughter kristine said it best. wilhelmina dungca tagle was matapang. brave. tough. fearless. she was fierce when she was protecting (or wrestling) her little brother as kids (nice memory, dad), fighting cancer (multiple times) or just loving her family and friends with all that she had.

a true matriarch, you taught all of us how to be strong but gentle, how to be unafraid to take over a dance floor, how to look out for others until the very end. we love you. rest in peace, tita wilma. by @ndungca

Maura was an Indigenous Filipino woman who came to St. Louis to be put on display at the 1904 World's Fair.

When she died before the fair began, a Smithsonian curator likely took her cerebellum for his "racial brain collection."

Today, @clurhealy and I published an illustrated investigation into Maura’s experience with art from the unbelievably talented @instanirenren.

Please check out the investigation — in both English and Filipino — and the accompanying videos. You can also purchase a package of the book in both languages at the Washington Post online store. Check out the links in my bio for more.

Filipino stories are so rarely told in US outlets, and this was a chance to shed light on a chapter of history that shouldn't be forgotten. It was completely surreal to see a story from our people and in our language on the homepage of the Washington Post.

I'm so proud of the 90+ people who helped bring this series to life, and thankful to the Post for investing in this important project.

Maraming salamat sa inyong lahat. by @ndungca
