"We get the chance to go out and represent the University of Tennessee, and wearing the orange Power T is a big deal."

From running for @vol_track to studying nuclear engineering in @utk.tce, Andie-Marie Jones knows a thing or two about perseverance. The Maryville, Tennessee, native has learned to balance academics with athletics, often facing challenging schedules, tough classes, and multiple priorities. Thanks to the support from her professors and coaches, she's been able to succeed at both.

"Both my coaches and my professors have been so willing to work with me...I don't think I would have been able to do it without them."

Now, as Jones prepares to graduate this week, she's ready to start working on an MBA this fall, connecting the engineering experience from her undergraduate degree with business and leadership management.

"I have come from this really awesome program and I want to be able to use all the knowledge I've been given to enhance the country and enhance society in any way that I can."

Congratulations to Harold Conner Jr. (BS ’68, MS ’78) on his induction to the 2026 Department of Nuclear Engineering Hall of Fame. 👏

Conner has more than five decades of experience in the nuclear industry with the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Nuclear Security Administration. He has also served on the UT NE Board of Advisors, the Tickle College of Engineering Board of Advisors, the Alumni Board of Directors, and the AIChE Board of Directors.

Congratulations to Jamie Porter, who has received the inaugural Katz Alumnus Award from the UT's Department of Nuclear Engineering! Porter was the first Black woman to graduate from UT’s nuclear engineering department. 👏

Porter was recognized for her outstanding contributions to radiation effects in space environments and for her active engagement in developing the next generation of nuclear scientists.

The University of Tennessee-led Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation Enabling Capabilities in Technology (DNN TECH) Consortium recently hosted more than 300 nuclear science and engineering students, faculty, national laboratory researchers, and program managers from across the country for the annual University Program Review (UPR) meeting.

Held at UT’s Student Union, UPR 2026 highlighted accomplishments and research from more than 40 universities participating in the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation Research & Development consortia, connecting students with Department of Energy/NNSA nuclear nonproliferation work and national laboratories as they address emerging nuclear nonproliferation challenges.

Prof. G. Ivan Maldonado traveled with five NE PhD #EngineeringVols to the recent American Nuclear Society's annual meeting in Denver, CO. These students presented their research in traditional fission topics such as criticality safety and nuclear fuel management, as well as studies of isotopic depletion, activation, shutdown dose rates, and waste characterization for fusion systems.

NE Assistant Professor Kondapa Naidu Bobba has been selected to receive the 2026 Young Investigator Award. 🏆 The reward will support Bobba's research in radiopharmaceutical therapies to improve the outcomes for patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. Congratulations!

8 years ago, #EngineeringVol Emma Houston arrived at UT with a clear vision of her future: explore a career involving science and government policy. Houston knew UT’s Department of Nuclear Engineering could help her accomplish her educational goals and grow as a person.

This week, Houston will take part in the doctoral hooding ceremony for completing her PhD in nuclear engineering, following the completion of her bachelor’s degree in 2022 and her master’s degree in 2023.

Becoming a mother helped Nuclear Engineering Assistant Professor Sandra Bogetic become a better mentor, realizing the skills she was developing as a parent translated to the classroom.
