POSTS STORIES REELS

Alright so I got this idea about 5 years ago. March 2020 to be specific. I wrote it down because I knew it was one of those ideas that wouldn't leave me alone and didn't really want it to.

The idea was just to write down the visuals that came to mind when listening to Modus Vivendi by 070 Shake (still one of my favourite albums ever). But when creating characters, backstories, settings and just living life it became VERSUS.

What I loved about sci-fi was how it mimicked aspects of real life through unnatural circumstances. The real life aspect I ended up focusing on was inner and outer conflict, which in turn led to a theme of self actualization. These topics alone gave way for a lot of directions and scenarios. I wanted to explore these questions and emotions through Moon, a character who has never been given explanations for anything intangible.

Directions that I did not expect to go into as a 19 year old writing about some songs made me think of.

Music still being one of my biggest writing tools, I found myself creating scenarios with the mental backdrop of Motown, 80s soft rock and pop, old school Arabic and Latin music and more.
Although set in modern day in a fictional town, I indulged in a lot of 70s and 80s sci-fi art for the mood of the story.
Other than that alot of inspiration just came from my own random questions and possible opposing arguments.

Alot has changed over 5 years, but one thing that stayed consistent was how much I wanted to share this story.

So finally...

VERSUS is officially for sale on FriesenPress website 💁🏾‍♀️ https://books.friesenpress.com/store/title/119734000476789697 by @nelly.noted

Went from looking up journalism for a character I was making in a book I still haven't finished writing, to enrolling in the program a year later and graduating.

Love a full circle moment.

April shenannies and then some 🍀🌺 by @nelly.noted

Holding the physical really does make the whole thing feel more real.

It's so weird seeing the manuscript that I re-read a million times on actual paper. And my name on the spine...and my name at the top of every page...😝

Side note: It looks like more than 200-somethng page in person.

Oh and of course the links are in my bio to purchase 😉 by @nelly.noted

I keep forgetting to share this highlight but this was a surreal moment in October.

Reading Versus by Chenelle Richards became one of those rare afternoons when the weather outside and the story inside the book seemed to belong to each other. The rain had been steady all day, tapping on the windows like an echo of Moon Castillo’s own restless mind, and with a mug of hot chocolate warming my hands, I let myself drift into Richards’ world.

The society of Mechanon, with its clinical control and muted emotions, felt even colder against the backdrop of the storm outside. Richards’ prose is striking not just in how it paints a dystopia, but in how it makes silence and suppression feel physical. As the chapters unfolded, I felt the weight of the clouds above me mirrored in the heavy choices Moon had to face.

What stayed with me most was the slow unraveling of truth. Each dream sequence that Moon experienced seemed to glow brighter against the dark afternoon, and I found myself savoring her revelations as one savors sips of chocolate on a damp, chilly day. The closeness between Moon and Aroha was beautifully rendered, not rushed but allowed to breathe, and it gave the book an emotional heartbeat that pulsed through every page.

The structure, framed around emotions in conflict, was unlike anything I’ve read recently. It pushed me to reflect on my own contradictions while listening to the rhythm of the rainfall outside. By the end, I closed the book with a sense of quiet awe, as though both the storm and the story had conspired to remind me how powerful it feels to reclaim one’s true self.

QOTD: Are You a morning bird or a night owl? Are you a mood reader or do you stick to your tbrs always?

$Versus: A Breathtaking Journey Through Identity and Truth ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Reading Versus by Chenelle Richards was an experience that shook me to my core. It is not just a novel but a journey that made me reflect on who I am and how fragile the idea of truth can be. I felt completely absorbed, often pausing just to take in the weight of what I had read. The world of Mechanon is unforgettable. Its cold, chemically controlled society felt so real that I often caught myself holding my breath, unsettled by its chilling atmosphere. It reminded me of the way Never Let Me Go or The Handmaid’s Tale mirror our own world’s hidden fears. Moon Castillo’s journey moved me deeply. Watching her slowly piece together her true self through dreams and fractured memories felt like being pulled into a beautiful, disorienting spiral. Her struggle made me think of my own battles with identity, and I found myself rooting for her with all my heart. The bond between Moon and Aroha left me stunned. Their love felt more than romantic, something essential and timeless. I lingered over certain passages, rereading them just to savor the tenderness and intensity Richards poured into their connection. The emotional framework of opposing chapters kept me constantly torn between craving answers and wanting to stay in the mystery. Combined with Richards’ lyrical prose, the novel became an experience I will never forget. By the final page, I felt haunted, changed, and deeply grateful. Versus is beautiful, daring, and absolutely unforgettable. #bookstagrammer #bookstagramcommunity #bookphotography #bookaesthetic #bookaddict #booklover #bookish #bookishlife #bookishlove #bookrecommendations #bookreview #bookreader #read #reader #readerlife #readerofinstagram #readersgonnaread #newbook #goodreads #sciencefiction by @nelly.noted$

Versus by Chenelle Richards was not just a book I read, for me it was a disorienting, beautiful plunge into a world that kept tugging at my thoughts long after I closed my Kindle. From the very first page, Mechanon’s cold precision unsettled me; I could almost feel the sterile air, the weight of its surveillance, and the quiet suffocation of chemically controlled emotions. It made me wonder, how much of my own identity is truly mine, and how much is shaped by the systems I live in?

Moon Castillo’s journey struck something deep within me. As her dreams began bleeding into waking life, I found myself leaning forward, heart quickening, caught between fascination and unease. When Aroha appeared, I felt that same jolt Moon must have felt, a mix of recognition and mystery that pulled me through every chapter. The tension between them was electric yet tender, and I found myself rooting for them even when the stakes made hope feel dangerous.

The chapter structure pairing emotions like Will vs. Wonder or Paranoia vs. Desire, mirrored my own reading experience. I felt the push and pull between wanting answers and savoring the uncertainty. There were moments when I paused just to breathe in the language, and others when I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough, desperate to know if Moon’s unraveling was madness, memory, or something stranger still.

By the end, Versus left me with a bittersweet ache and an unsettling question: if the truth shatters your world, is it worth knowing? For me, the answer like the novel was both beautiful and terrifying.
