๐ŸšจATTENTION NERVE NERDS๐Ÿšจ As the ASPN Executive Council prepares for its first strategic planning session, we want to hear from you. Members received a feedback survey earlier this morning via email. Your feedback is essential to understanding how well the ASPN is meeting member needs, where we can improve the value of membership, and what opportunities we should prioritize for the future. These contributions will help inform leadership discussions and ensure that member perspectives are considered as we evaluate our Societyโ€™s direction, priorities, and future initiatives. ย  The survey takes approximately 7 minutes to complete. Thank you for sharing your perspectives and helping shape the future of the ASPN. Please be sure to respond by Monday, November 16, 2026. ย  #nervenerds #aspn #peripheralnerve by @nervenerds

Take a look at the Freiburg Facial Nerve Instructional Course! ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿป๐Ÿ”ฌ We had an outstanding two days dedicated to facial nerve surgery, education, and collaboration in Freiburg. Hosted by Prof. Steffen Eisenhardt and Dr. Jakob WeiรŸ, the course brought together an international faculty for life surgeries, in-depth lectures, discussion, and the exchange of approaches to facial nerve reconstruction and reanimation. A special thank you to the exceptional faculty, including Dr. Shai Rozen, Dr. Nate Jowett, Dr. Stefania Tuinder, Dr. Andres Rodriguez, Dr. John Tzou, and many more, for sharing their expertise and experience. And the good news: the course is expected to return biannually. ๐Ÿ‘ See you in Freiburg next time! ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช #ASPN #PeripheralNerve #FacialNerve #FacialNerveSurgery #FacialReanimation by @nervenerds

In our latest #NewInNerve episode, weโ€™re discussing a systematic review and meta-analysis from JPRAS on targeted nipple-areola complex reinnervation (TNR) and sensory recovery after mastectomy, including gender-affirming chest surgery ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€โšง๏ธ The study: Gundlach and colleagues reviewed 10 observational studies including 281 unique patients, with 4 studies focused on gender-affirming surgery. Three comparative cohorts were sufficiently similar to be included in the primary meta-analysis. The findings: TNR was associated with significantly better postoperative nipple sensation, with a pooled mean difference of โˆ’1.40 Semmes-Weinstein units compared with no reinnervation. In the gender-affirming subgroup, the effect was similar at โˆ’1.54 units. Additional studies also reported improved two-point discrimination and higher rates of nipple erection after reinnervation ๐Ÿ“ˆ The takeaway: TNR appears to meaningfully improve nipple-areola complex sensory recovery after mastectomy, but the current evidence is still based on observational studies with heterogeneous techniques and moderate-to-serious risk of bias. Larger prospective multicenter studies with standardized sensory testing are needed before routine implementation. ๐Ÿ—ž๏ธ Gundlach C, Rahman R, Martinez M, et al. โญ๏ธAlbert Marinacci was a neurologist who first described the Marinacci anastomosis in 1964 after evaluating a patient who had suffered a traumatic injury to the median nerve. This patient had preservation of median nerve innervated hand muscles despite denervation of forearm flexors. This further led him to this discovery๐Ÿ’กUp to today, the exact incidence of this rare communication is still unknown! How many more nerve connections can you name in the forearm/hand? Mention below!๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป by @nervenerds
