Their ongoing work includes the conservation of a significant collection of rare genealogical documents and centuries-old pedigrees, supported by the Heritage Council’s Stewardship Grant.

THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN OF HEARSE ROAD🌑🐎

Did you know that one of the most chilling legends associated with the Donabate area tells of a mysterious Headless Horseman?

Just a stone's throw from Newbridge House & Farm, Hearse Road is linked to local tales of a terrifying rider said to haunt the darkness. 🌫️

🕯️ But what is the story behind the legend?

In Irish folklore, the boundary between the living and the supernatural has long inspired tales of mysterious figures, ghostly encounters and unexplained happenings. The Headless Horseman belongs to this eerie tradition, capturing the imagination of generations with the image of a rider emerging from the darkness.

As Samhain approaches - the ancient Irish festival marking the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter - stories like these remind us of Ireland's rich tradition of supernatural folklore.

🍂 Samhain was traditionally associated with the Otherworld, spirits and the mysterious forces believed to roam the landscape as the seasons changed.

🏰 Here at Newbridge House & Farm, we're surrounded by history, heritage and the stories that make our local area so fascinating.

As Halloween draws near, we invite you to discover the legends, traditions and mysteries woven into Ireland's past.

👀 Would you dare to travel down Hearse Road on a dark Samhain night?

Tell us in the comments! 👇

🎃 Before pumpkins, there were TURNIPS!🕯️👻

Did you know Ireland’s original Halloween lanterns were carved from turnips?

Long before pumpkins took over Halloween, our ancestors hollowed out turnips, carved spooky faces into them and placed glowing embers or candles inside. 🔥

Rooted in the ancient traditions of Samhain, these eerie lanterns were believed to help ward off wandering spirits on the night when the veil between the worlds was thought to grow thin. 🌑

When Irish immigrants brought their traditions to America, they discovered that pumpkins were much bigger and easier to carve. And so, the pumpkin jack-o’-lantern was born! 🎃

But before the bright orange grins, there were the twisted, ghostly faces of the humble Irish turnip.

This Samhain, let's remember the roots of our Halloween traditions. Our ancestors were carving spooky lanterns long before pumpkin season became a thing!

Would you try carving a traditional Irish turnip lantern? 👀🕯️
