Surfer swept over the jetty at 56th Street in Newport Beach, CA. Thankfully, no one was injured.

These currents are no joke. Use caution and stay aware of changing ocean conditions. Heavy surf is expected to continue through Labor Day. High Surf Advisory and Coastal Flooding Advisory remain in effect until Tuesday evening. by @newportbeachlifeguards

Here’s a rare angle of this swell at Wedge from our friends in the air @hbpolicedept and @huntington_beach_lifeguards What do you think? Is this the most documented swell is Newport history?

One of the best videos capturing the unseen moments of a critical lifeguard rescue in Newport Beach, CA.

@newportbeachlifeguards perform a multi-victim rescue on 4th of July with multiple guards in the water, the Sea Watch rescue vessel, and approximately 12 victims scattered along a “dog-leg” rip current along one of the jetties in Newport Beach, CA. The rip current is a great example of how quickly these situations can pull victims out and shows the appropriate scale of how powerful the current can be.

This aerial view captured by @hbpolicedept Air Support with @huntington_beach_lifeguards staffed as a rescue swimmer is critical in being at the right place and time to show what the job demands. All of this is a collective effort to show what lifeguards do which is rarely seen.

Great job to everyone involved.

All victims made it safely back.

Thank you @jakob_kress for the quick thinking on the video.

By lifeguards, for life.

Video Description & Transcript:
A public service announcement video featuring two Newport Beach Fire Department personnel sharing Halloween safety tips in front of a fire engine at the station. The video begins with the two personnel greeting each other and introducing the upcoming safety reminders before heading outdoors to demonstrate pedestrian safety—emphasizing the importance of using crosswalks, looking both ways, expecting the unexpected, and carrying flashlights or glow sticks to remain visible to drivers after dark. To illustrate costume safety, a firefighter wearing full turnout gear and a helmet trips and falls during a demonstration, highlighting why it is crucial to wear properly fitted costumes that do not restrict movement or visibility. Holding a pumpkin, the speakers then recommend skipping open flames in favor of safer, battery-powered lighting options. The video concludes with a reminder to stay together and stay visible, wishing the community a happy and safe Halloween. by @newportbeachlifeguards

King Tides begin tomorrow, October 26, with high tide expected to peak at 9:15 a.m. Exceptionally high tides are expected through Wednesday, October 28.

Today’s high tide reached 8.0 feet, approximately 1.8 feet above predictions, increasing the potential for coastal flooding in low-lying areas.

City crews and contractors have been working throughout the weekend to prepare, reinforcing protective sand berms, placing thousands of sandbags in vulnerable areas, inspecting storm drains and tide valves and positioning pumps and emergency equipment.

Residents in low-lying and waterfront areas are urged to take precautions by protecting their properties with sandbags or temporary flood barriers and moving vehicles to higher ground if needed.

Starting tonight, parking enforcement will be suspended through Wednesday, October 28 at 6 p.m. to allow residents to relocate vehicles to higher ground or City public parking lots if needed.

Free, prefilled sandbags are available at the City Corporation Yard, 592 Superior Ave., while supplies last.

Please stay off protective sand berms and keep clear of heavy machinery. City crews will continue monitoring conditions, operating pumps and responding to flooding throughout the King Tides event.

For additional information and flood preparation resources, visit NewportBeachCA.gov/ElNino.

Sand deliveries are underway at the Wedge 🌊

Approximately 30 to 40 trucks are transporting sand from the area above Prado Dam near Norco to reinforce protective sand berms ahead of next week’s King Tides. The goal is to deliver approximately 2,000 cubic yards by the end of the week.

Due to heavy machinery and ongoing sand operations, beach access from the Wedge to M Street is temporarily closed. Please respect stay off the berms and keep clear of active work areas.

Sand replenishment work in West Newport is also expected to begin this week.

The Newport Beach City Council has declared a local emergency ahead of exceptionally high King Tides expected October 26–28. The City has also activated its Emergency Operations Center to coordinate flood prevention and response efforts.

The City Council also approved the West Newport Beach Sand Replenishment Project, which will bring approximately 100,000 cubic yards of sand from the Santa Ana River mouth to eroded beach areas between 36th and 62nd Streets. Work is expected to begin later this week.

City crews are also reinforcing protective sand berms, preparing pumps and tide valves and positioning resources in flood-prone areas.

With ocean water levels already running higher than predicted, residents in low-lying and waterfront areas are strongly encouraged to take precautions now to protect their homes, vehicles and property.

Free, prefilled sandbags are available at:

📍 Corporation Yard: 592 Superior Ave.
📍 Marina Park: 1600 W. Balboa Blvd.
📍 Temporary Fire Station No. 1: East Ocean Front Parking Lot near Balboa Pier

Empty sandbags are available at Lifeguard Headquarters and all Newport Beach fire stations, while supplies last.
