A reminder that for us, Indigenous Peoples’ Day is every day. We’re excited to share the teaser trailer for American Indian Cultural District's State Recognition film!

Founded on March 31, 2020, the American Indian Cultural District is the only city- and state-recognized American Indian Cultural District in the United States. We elevate and celebrate American Indian arts, cultures, peoples, and contributions while advancing policies and opportunities that strengthen our communities, organizations, and businesses throughout Yelamu (San Francisco).

📚🌿 Indigenous stories matter—and the stories we share with young readers can shape how they understand identity, resilience, belonging, and the world around them.

At this year’s 20th Annual Heyday Harvest, we’re proud to spotlight a powerful conversation on Native children’s literature, featuring acclaimed authors Brook Thompson, Sage Andrew Romero, Loralee Sepsey, and Lyn Risling authors of:

🐟️ 𝙄 𝙇𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙎𝙖𝙡𝙢𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙇𝙖𝙢𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙮𝙨: 𝘼 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙎𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚
🏫 𝘼𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙋𝙞𝙥𝙚𝙧 𝙎𝙥𝙚𝙖𝙠𝙨 𝙐𝙥 (𝙁𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙅𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙑𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙢𝙚 3)
🔤 𝘼 𝙞𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝘼𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙣: 𝘼 𝘾𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙖 𝙄𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙖𝙣 𝘼𝘽𝘾

Together, they’ll explore the creativity and cultural importance of Indigenous storytelling for young people—and the impact these books can have in classrooms, homes, and communities.

From stories rooted in Native California to narratives that bring Indigenous histories and experiences to new generations, this panel celebrates children’s literature as a space for connection, representation, and cultural continuity.

Come celebrate the authors and stories helping young readers see themselves—and their communities—reflected on the page.

Terria Smith and Obi Kaufmann take the stage at this year’s Heyday Harvest! 🌾

Join us for the 20th Annual Harvest, a celebration of the power of independent publishing—and an evening spotlighting two remarkable new releases from Heyday:

🌏️ 𝙄 𝙇𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙎𝙤 𝙈𝙖𝙣𝙮 by @newsfromnativecalifornia editor Terria Smith, an anti-colonial travel memoir that explores, with humor and grace, what it means to be a citizen of the world today.

🌿 𝘾𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙖 𝙄𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙊𝙪𝙩 by Obi Kaufmann, creator of the bestselling California Field Atlas series. This pocket-sized treatise invites us to reimagine humanity’s relationship with the living world through an expansive rethinking of the concept of “mind.”

This year’s Harvest will also honor Jane Fonda and Rhae Lynn Barnes with the Heyday Lifetime Achievement and History Awards, alongside a special spotlight on Indigenous children’s literature.
