Josh Faught: Santuary @henryartgallery.

This monumental tapestry was commissioned for St Mark’s Cathedral by Western Bridge in 2016 and is now part of the Henry collection. This work evokes histories and practices of building queer connection and spaces of safety, and threats that disrupt that safety. It’s a salient piece for this moment, and a reminder that history holds tools of resistance and survival to recall to our advantage today.

Newer basket works and wearable knits complement Sanctuary creating a conversation between individual and the collective identity and the duality of visibility.

Join us on March 15th at the Henry for the spring open house to hear from Josh and celebrate his powerful work. @hjfaught 💜💜✨✨🌈🌈 by @ngbozicnik

I’m thrilled to share that the Henry is hiring an associate curator and an associate curator of programs! Learn more about these two exciting opportunities to amplify the work of contemporary artists, connecting audiences with the art and ideas defining our times at henryart.org/about/opportunities.

This weekend we celebrated the opening of our fall exhibitions @henryartgallery, including AK Burns: What is Perverse is Liquid and Lucy Kim: Mutant Optics. It’s been an absolute privilege to work with these thought-expanding artists and to bring their shows to life with the exceptional Henry team. These shows animate the potency of the artistic imaginations and the story of our collective humanity in absorbing material and visual ways.

What is Perverse is Liquid features immersive video installation, sculpture, and wall-based artworks from across the last decade of AK’s practice. The exhibition centers on AK’s Negative Space series, which explores the world-building potential of science fiction. Wary of how the genre often perpetuates imbalances of power—think techno utopian future fantasies—AK imagines an alternative “speculative present.” Marginalized bodies and the environment are active agents and protagonist that reorder social relationships. Visually and sonically engrossing, AK’s work creates a portal to envision possibilities for transformation and a world of collective liberation.

Mutant Optics advances Lucy’s longstanding investigation of how vision and visual culture works, asking questions about how and what we see. It is the first museum exhibition of Lucy’s experimental printmaking technique using bacteria that produce melanin directly on paper. The resulting images examine the relationships between visual appearance, bioengineering, and the social and cultural construction of race. Her epic installation of these layered and sculptural prints, challenge the neutrality of knowledge production and invite us to think critically about the ongoing risks and possibilities of scientific invention, ever-important amid technological change.

Grateful beyond measure to @aaykayburns and @slucykim for the opportunity to create these shows and share them with Henry audiences.✨✨✨ by @ngbozicnik

Last month, I had the privilege of being in conversation with art faculty at the University of Oregon, on the occasion of their exhibition Artists, Constellations, Connections: Feminist Futures, at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art and organized in concert with the 5oth anniversary of the Center for the Study of Women in Society.

We covered a lot of ground in our conversation, which was framed through the lens of intersectionality, the potential of feminist kinship, and challenging the techniques of power that limit whose existences and voices matters. We talked about myths of neutrality in visual culture, conditions of dislocation and cultural identification, perceptions of nature and 'the natural', and the role of touch and sensation in producing knowledge--reclaiming the patriarchal tendency to disassociate us from the knowledge our bodies hold.

It was a pleasure to be in conversation with these artists and think alongside their work. So much gratitude for the hospitality from all in this gem of a community in Eugene.

Sophia Al-Maria’s Not My Bag is on view for one more day. It has been a privilege to realize this show @henryartgallery and to create space for others to experience the brilliance of Sophia’s multidimensional work. Look, look again, read from a different perspective, her poetry in words and images tell us—what are the false and hidden narratives we’ve inherited and at whose expense? To journey into her work is to unspool certainty about normalized histories and material conditions. It is powerful and tender and made from the residue of violence and love, and from it I have learned so much. What treasures— this work and Sophia ✨✨ by @ngbozicnik

The incredible work of Tammy Nguyen at ICA Boston. The layered collage of marks that animate the surfaces of these unforgettable works entangle histories of American imperialism, land reform in Vietnam, and the Transcendentalism of Ralph Waldo Emerson. I saw this work in progress in the studio and it’s a marvel to see it here complete with all the density of accumulated layers. Feeling the resonance of the entwined relations between land, power, humanity, and meaning within this moment across geographies.

Congrats @tammowhammo and @jeffreydeblois. by @ngbozicnik

What a treat to see exciting work by artists in the PNW both familiar and new to me. Congrats to all the artists and the curatorial team: @roya_a, @ranitasan, @jaleesa31, and @emilyfzimm

Work pictured here by Dez’Moon Omega Fair, @itssatpreet, @melcartermelcarter, Kamari Bright, @berettemacaulay, Maria Zamora, @tannazfarsi. In various ways these works are alive with a poetry and power of ancestral and embodied memory, negotiating a past in the present and dreaming of alternative futures, and the potency and magic of beauty, in many forms.

A true delight to see so many people experiencing this work as part of the expansive lineup of the multi-faceted festival, mixing art forms and audiences✨ by @ngbozicnik

Today Sophia Al-Maria: Not My Bag opens @henryartgallery! It’s been an absolute privilege and honor to work with Sophia and bring her astute work and vision to the Henry. The show is a marvel and stunningly presented thanks to the collective labor and heart of so many. I’m in awe as always of the talent and unparalleled skill of the Henry’s exhibition team—Sage, Eric, Rachel, Trevor, and on-call prep Ray and Bay. Gorgeous, spot-on exhibition identity by Summer. Steadfast support from Adam. And Christopher at Project Native Informant.

We’ll be celebrating all this collective work and Sophia’s brilliant art with a big party in the fall when students are back on campus. I’ll gush more there. For now, a hearty congrats to all!

Galleries are open. Come check it out✨

Nate Clarke: (In)Form @madartseattle. Big congrats to Nate @nateclarkoly and the whole team of support that brought this stunner of a show into being. Support is an apropos word for the show. It implies relationship between bodies, environments, and objects and those relations are poignantly alive in the materials, construction, installation, and context of this work. The suspended cedar bowls resonate in particular—these open, containers levitate off the ground, generous in the space they hold and vulnerable in contingent relationship to the threads that hold them aloft. All in relation. ❤️❤️❤️
