🇬🇧 To end shark fishing, on of the key players to a healthy ocean, it is necessary to involve all stakeholders including local fishermen. This Fundraiser aims to help providing alternative income and a future for this local community, so they do not depend on fishing sharks. With your donation, a whole crew can be paid, so they can take care of their families and take part in activities contributing to conservation. December is a month of low tourism in Lombok, so they really depend on our donations.

Experiencing these raw moments of unfiltered truth, witnessing the effects of our actions first hand, humbled me.
I’m not blaming the fishermen, they’re just doing what they have to survive.

The moment you put your ego aside, you realise what a privilege it is to live in wealth.
It’s a privilege to be able to go to school as a child without worrying.
It’s a privilege to be able to start your job out of interest.
It’s a privilege to have a choice.
Blaming others is easy.
Closing our eyes is easy.
But only if we act with love instead of hate, with understanding instead of blame and face the problems together instead of alone, can we manage to find a solution.
Think about your consumption.
Think about your seafood, where it comes from, your cosmetics, your pet food.

It’s hard to put into words how profound the experiences I had with @projecthiu were.
This is how humanity should be.
We formed a bond between people who did not know each other but we left, standing shoulder to shoulder, determined to make a difference.
Experience it for yourself and join @projecthiu on day trips, week-long trips or support through buying merch and by giving donations .
Every little bit counts. Together we can achieve anything.

In June 2024, I went on a week-long trip with Project Hiu. To overcome the problems and conflicts in the world today, we must overcome what separates us and focus on what connects us. One of the best people I know who embodies this is @sharkgirlmadison. She and the fishermen in Lombok have built something special, which I would like to tell you a little about in this video.

Moments I captured at a fishing market in Indonesia. When we eat seafood, feed fish to our pets, use cosmetics with squalene, this is the price that’s being paid. Not by you and me, but by these magnificent animals and the people depending on catching them.
You might think of this scene as cruelty and brutality, but the fishermen and their families working at the market only try to survive. It’s a job like every other.

Between conservation and exploitation: inside Indonesia‘s shark trade

The floor of the market hall is wet. It smells of fish, burning plastic and tobacco. People with baskets full of fish rush from one stall to the next. It’s only 5 am, but the business is done here at dawn. Behind the auction area is the landing stage for boats.
Women sit on the ground, sorting through piles of fish. I spot them inbetween: Dozens of sharks and the highly endangered shark-like rays like guitar- and wedgefishes.
