At CalArts, interdisciplinary practice isn’t a buzzword. It’s the way we work.

Nic Cruz’s MFA thesis show, TO CLIMB A TREE, is a vibrant example of this creative exchange and CalArts’ collaborative spirit.

Cruz brought the community together for an open mic night, jam sessions, poetry readings and performances, alongside his own work spanning mediums of painting, drawing, sculpture, audio, and animation.

Ultimately, what ties it all together is a mindset: keep going, and you’ll get something back.

Visit Cruz this weekend at the School of Art's MFA Open Studios and see his multidisciplinary work in person in Broad studio #4!

Explore the magic of FOUR, a mid-residency show by Art MFA Nic Cruz.

Cruz’s installation delves into the symbolism of the number four, inviting viewers into an interactive space, complete with vibrant paintings, toy cars, and a puppet show—a direct nod to the influence of his puppeteer grandfather.

三扶 Three Caresses (2026)
for guqin, transducer, and live electronics

Three Caresses is inspired by “Wuxianqin” (stringless guqin). Tao Yuanming, a Jin dynasty poet who didn’t know how to play the guqin, possessed a stringless guqin as an object to caress. He often caressed the stringless guqin, in order to feel the sound that could potentially be created by the instrument.

Hand movements from caressing are used as the thematic material for this composition in variation form. The amplifiers, transducers, and live electronics are used to enhance the sound created by caresses.

✨THIS WEEK✨ Las Tres Hermanas is an collaboratively-written opera by the CalArts composers’
collective System 9. The opera, inspired by magical realism and indigenous
Mexican folklore, tells two mirrored stories of three sisters—one of ancient myth
and one in a modern, postcolonial setting. Join us for either evening in the Mark
Taper courtyard (outside the Wild Beast) to hear this original production inspired
by Mexican folk music, Western classical music, experimentalism, and jazz. by @nicruzer
