Nigel Foster: teaching, designing, writing about kayaks. Discovering the world in kayaks with Kristin Nelson

POSTS STORIES REELS

Paddles have always been alotted a substantial bit of space in my brain. It's only natural they should spring to mind when I'm on the water, maneuvering my kayak, propelling it forward, playing with currents. Over the years, I've had the opportunity to put a few of my ideas regarding paddles into production.

Working with different manufacturers exposed me to different methods of production & materials.
My first paddles were made by Nimbus, in Canada, for Seaward Kayaks. Later, I designed my dream paddle, the Nigel Foster Air, for Point65.

Before I designed any paddles, I paddled with numerous brands, Lendal, Double Dutch, Lightning, Werner, to name a few. Consulting to Bending Branches, I could compare blades that had the same shapes, but made in wood or fiberglass & then, test the same blades in different sizes. All these experiences were useful in understanding paddles, and therefore kayaking, the main focus in my life.

But who really needs several dozen paddles?!
I'm keeping my favorites, the rest most of them, used mainly in demos & for research, will be for sale at Gear SALE.

Will I have kayaks at my gear sale? Who knows. I love them all & I'm just not sure at this point. Do I really need 5 Whisky 16's? Maybe. One should have a glass version & a plastic, a spare & then a couple more for when someone drops into town & wants to go for a paddle. So, still ruminating.🤔

Dm me with questions by @nigel_kayaks_world

Back in the day, I had trouble keeping my paddle secure on the back deck, where I couldn't see it in rough weather.
I always felt there was a need for some sort of paddle bag, something I could clip on my deck but also use for transporting them around in cars and the like. Paddles can be unwieldy when loose. They're also expensive. We depend on them & they should be looked after.

After expressing my want to @krikristudio, we came up with this paddle bag. It's just about perfect, lightweight, durable & still protctive. She made all the first ones. Later, we had someone make us up a batch of them.

Pictures show this versatile bag in action on the Canal de Midi in France. Not only did it function on the front deck, it was also useful for transporting baguettes from the boulangerie to our camp.

We'll have paddle bags at my Gear Sale

I closed my online store several years ago & I've accumulated a certain amount of excess gear over the years. This fall seems like as good a time as any to hold a gear sale to free up some personal space, but also to get stuff into the hands of people who can use it.

What kind of stuff?
New and used.
Paddles by Point 65, Warner, Bending Branches, Nigel Foster, pfd's, spray skirts, foot braces, trade show tent, skegs, hatches, sails, maybe a kayak or two.

Actual date to be announced in September.
If you're interested in anything, feel free to message me.

Shop inquiries welcome! 😎 by @nigel_kayaks_world

Several years ago we set off in my little solo canoe. It wasn't a long paddle, less than 10 minutes out to Foster Island in Seattle, but it was the beginning of a great adventure!
Happy anniversary, baby! by @nigel_kayaks_world

It's a good day when old friends cross paths & so wonderful to see @kayakmichael & Lisa before they boarded the ferry to Alaska. They should have a good summer, leading an @uncommonadv
trip & taking some time off for their own adventures. by @nigel_kayaks_world

March 26th, I will be giving a presentation on my 2 trips to Labrador, the 1st in 1981, when I paddled across the Hudson Strait solo & the 2nd in 2004, when I returned with my now wife, Kristin Nelson, to complete that unfinished, epic journey.

The talk, benefiting @washingtonwatertrails , is in Seattle at the Good Shepherd Home.
Find more details on their site.

There will also be a zoom version.

Message me with your contact details and we will send you a link closer to the date.

The 2 trips are covered in my book, "On Polar Tides", available on Amazon by @nigel_kayaks_world

Back in England to visit family & had the most unexpected treat, joining in with my brother, David at the open mic at the greyhound pub. Couldn't have been more delighted! by @nigel_kayaks_world

Something that has intrigued me for a long time. Why does it appear to have so many different shades? It's fun to explore the reasons why water is such a chameleon.
