Feature: Upstream Gallery
An interview with Nieck de Bruijn and Anne de Jong

For more than twenty years, Upstream Gallery has approached contemporary art with a sense of curiosity, following artists and ideas wherever they lead. That journey has shaped a programme spanning software, internet art, blockchain, AI, painting, sculpture, and installation, always guided by the work rather than the medium.

In our latest feature, Nina Knaack speaks with founder Nieck de Bruijn and gallery manager Anne de Jong about the gallery’s evolution, the artists who shaped its programme, and why staying curious remains central to everything they do.

Silk Magazine / New feature
@a.a.murakami

This spring, the artist duo A.A.Murakami entered a new level of public visibility: Azusa Murakami appeared on the TED2026 stage in Vancouver, the Airo Dress they developed with @irisvanherpen was worn by @eileengu at the 2026 Met Gala, and the duo is presenting a new work in the Uzbekistan National Pavilion at the 61st Venice Biennale, running through November.

Our editor @nina_knaack sat down with the artists for a full conversation about the practice they have built over time, at a moment when that work is moving through museums and biennials and entering a broader public conversation.

Did digital art edge away from spectacle and toward something steadier?

We spoke with gallerists from four corners of the art world to try and understand the shift we see on the horizon. Building from last year, we saw digital art begin to move out of it’s silo and into the contemporary art community.

It seems like 2026 will not be defined by a single hype wave, but instead by those who are committed to putting in the work, and building the infrastructure to help digital art survive.

Drawing on conversations with @eliodanna (@thehouseoffineart) @miminguyenmimi (@nguyenwahedart), @adamberninger (@heft_gallery), and Stephen Santoro (@vertufineart), our editor-in-chief @nina_knaack traced what consolidated in 2025, and what may (finally) move the dial this year.

Silk Magazine / New story

Featuring @nytmag & @evinartgallery photographer: Devin Oktar Yalkin

“Being Turkish-Armenian-American, I’ve often lived between worlds,” he says. “Subcultures build their own sense of family and ritual within that same in-between space. That becomes a new home for the members.”

Photographer @devinyalkin has long been drawn to people and places that live outside the mainstream. Whether in a Chinatown boxing ring or at a Vampire Ball in New Orleans, his lens finds what happens when communities create their own worlds.

Yalkin’s images turn that liminal feeling into a visual language: monochrome, raw, high-contrast, and close.

#MagazinebySilkArtHouse: The summer of Summer Wagner

A conversation on slowness, new work, fate, agency and art-making in a restless world.

In dialogue with SILK’s editor-in-chief Nina Knaack, @summergwagner recounts a season of slowing down, “repotting” her practice, and opening new space for art and life in general.

Summer Wagner, grew up between Illinois and Southern California and is known for staged photographs that treat light both as subject and character.

Between long walks, films, and time among redwoods, Wagner thought about ambiguity and agency in her work this summer. She reflected on the transition from her staged photographs to her new video vignettes ‘I.Lovers’ [first shown live within the SILK community at Silk Road Day 02 in New York in June] and ‘II.Siblings’ plus ‘III.Friends’.

“I try to build an ecology of feelings,” she says to describe her practice that resists certainty and makes room for vulnerability and rhythm.

Alongside the interview, Wagner shared the books and films that shaped her summer in 2025.

From Virginia Woolf and Ted Chiang to Ari Aster’s ‘Eddington’ — tracing the sources of inspiration and reflection that move through her work.

We invite you to read the full conversation via the link in bio.
