ready to go with Booty Vortex at Players tonight 🥁🙏🏻 by @nonutscymbalsleeves

There’s just something about playing my Mapex Saturn bop kit that makes every gig feel good. That 18-inch bass drum is one of my favorite parts of the whole setup—it’s compact, punchy, easy to move, and still gives me way more depth and power than people expect from a bop-size kit.

I’ve really fallen in love with Mapex drums over the years. The Saturns have such a rich, musical tone, the hardware feels solid, and they work for way more than just jazz. I can take this little kit into rock, pop, funk, country, blues, singer-songwriter gigs—whatever the night calls for—and it just keeps delivering.

And then there’s Meinl cymbals. I love how much personality they have. The textures, the darkness, the attack, the way they sit around the drums instead of fighting them—it gives me so many sounds to pull from. Playing Mapex and Meinl together has become a big part of my setup and honestly a big part of my journey as a drummer.

That’s what I love about gear: it becomes part of the story. Different gigs, different stages, different musicians, but these drums and cymbals keep coming along for the ride. I’m grateful for every show, every setup, every groove, and every chance I get to keep building this journey behind the kit. 🥁🔥

any time there’s a pit band gig in musical theatre, the drum-kit morphs into a set-up I would never have thought of otherwise…
