“Jidd bhi gaya re, teri yaad khadi payi manne…
Jeene koni deti, haaye bairan…” 🤍

This song resonates to me on a different level as an NRI, living abroad, away from my family. No matter where I go or how much I try to stay busy, there is always that feeling of missing home that just stays with you.

Sometimes we think this life away from home gives us everything — opportunities, growth, independence, an exciting lifestyle, and a better future. And it really does. You start building something for yourself, you grow in ways you never imagined.

But at the same time, it takes away from you the most important thing — your home, your family. The people who are a part of your everyday life, the small moments, the comfort, the feeling of belonging somewhere without even trying.

You learn to live with it, you learn to adjust, you keep moving forward… but there’s always a part of you that stays back with them. And that’s the part this song brings out for me every single time.

“Paar Chanaa De”—across the Chenab—is rooted in the Punjabi love story of Sohni and Mahiwal. The song gives voice to Sohni’s conversation with her clay pot as she tries to cross the river: she can see her beloved’s home on the other bank, but the pot warns that its unbaked clay cannot survive the water.

Sohni was a potter’s daughter who fell in love with Mahiwal, a traveller who stayed to be near her. Forced into marriage with someone else, she would cross the Chenab at night using a fired earthen pot for support, meeting Mahiwal on the opposite shore.

One night, her pot was secretly replaced with an unbaked one. As it dissolved in the river, she lost her only support. Mahiwal entered the water to save her, but neither survived.

What moved me was the distance between seeing someone you love and being unable to reach them.

Through this AI-created film, I wanted to give that feeling a visual form. I imagined their happier moments first—the shy glances, laughter in the market, and quiet closeness—so they would remain present even in the final scene.

The hands that almost meet, the memories that interrupt the darkness, and the diya that finally goes out are my way of expressing what I felt in the song: longing, helplessness, and the grief of an unfinished life together.
