POSTS STORIES REELS

A summer of growth, purpose, and finding my voice. 🤎✨

This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to be part of the Collective Success Network (CSN), a program dedicated to empowering first-generation and/or low-income college students through mentorship, professional development, networking, and leadership opportunities.

Throughout the program, I had the opportunity to create a policy brief dedicated to Nourishing Roots, focusing on an issue that I’m passionate about and believe deserves greater attention.

To close out the program, I was honored to be selected to present my policy brief to my peers, mentors, and professionals. Being able to stand in front of a room and share work that I poured so much thought and purpose into was an experience I’ll always carry with me.

CSN reminded me that my voice, my experiences, and my ideas have a place at the table. I’m so grateful for the mentors, connections, and community that made this experience possible.

First, but not alone. 🤎

Access to support starts with knowing your rights. For many immigrant and first-gen families, fear or uncertainty around immigration status can make programs like WIC feel confusing or even out of reach. But having accurate, up-to-date information matters. WIC can help eligible families access nutritious foods, breastfeeding support, nutrition education, and connections to other health resources and under current federal guidance, WIC is not considered in a public charge determination.

From the Ivory Coast (Côte d’Ivoire) centers on the importance of warmth, healing, and recovery after childbirth.

In many Ivorian communities, the postpartum period is deeply respected, and the diet is intentionally designed to help a new mother regain her strength and support lactation. A common tradition involves the preparation of specific, nutrient-dense soups or porridges made with local ingredients. These meals are often warm, easy to digest, and rich in flavors like ginger, palm oil, or local herbs that are believed to have restorative properties for the body.

The focus is not just on nourishment, but also on the act of care. These meals are frequently prepared by elder women in the family, like grandmothers or aunts, to allow the new mother to focus on sacred rest and bonding with her baby.
