Highlights from a great day on the water with our Shark Tagging Research and Education Program! On this day, with help from @wakethewildfl @surfskatescience , we worked up three nurse sharks off the coast of Fort Lauderdale and sent them on their way! by @nsu_sharkresearch
About 34,000 miles. One shark. Nearly 10 years of data. 🦈 Milo is a 26-foot whale shark first tagged off Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula in 2017. He’s set the record for the longest movement track ever documented for a shark. He's crossed the Gulf of Mexico, passed the northern Caribbean, ranged east of Bermuda, and made it as far north as Massachusetts. And sometimes, he stays put for months. "Milo has revealed just how flexible whale sharks can be," says Dr. Mahmood Shivji, director of NSU's Guy Harvey Research Institute. Tracking Milo has been a team effort involving the Guy Harvey Foundation, the Guy Harvey Research Institute at NSU, Mexican conservation organization Ch'ooj Ajauil AC, and the University of Rhode Island. This accomplishment was recently covered by Forbes. Meet our newest Rock The Ocean family members! 🦈🩵 These silky sharks were named after some of our amazing volunteers and are helping our partners at @nsu_sharkresearch advance shark research and shark conservation. Silky sharks are the second most commonly caught shark species in global commercial fisheries, making it more important than ever to understand where they travel and how we can better protect them. Check out their tracking at link in bio! *Choose Silky Sharks → Galapagos 2024 → Ava, Ashley, Alex* by @nsu_sharkresearch
Congratulations to MS students Shelby Pawlikowski and Justin Chandler-Holtz on delivering great presentations at the 2026 American Elasmobranch Society meeting in New Orleans! In her presentation entitled “A Family Business: Genomic Assessment of Decades-Long Ecotourism Feeding on Southern Stingrays (Hypanus americanus)”, Shelby presented her research on genetic relatedness among southern stingrays at the world-famous Stingray City Sandbar in the Cayman Islands. Justin presented his research on assessing the genomic health of angelsharks in the Canary Islands with his presentation entitled “A Genomics Assessment of the Status of the Critically Endangered Angelshark (Squatina squatina) in its Last Geographic Stronghold”. Great work from both of our students! by @nsu_sharkresearch

If you've been out on the water this month with our shark tagging education and research program, you've caught and tagged a nurse shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum)! Coincidentally, May is also National Nurses Month! What better time to show these relatively common local sharks (and the medical professionals in your life) some appreciation? Thanks to all the volunteers from @surfskatescience, @adhus_fauhs, and @lascuolamiami ! by @nsu_sharkresearch
We had an incredible week at Sharks International 2026 in Sri Lanka, where 800+ attendees from over 80 countries gathered to share their research to promote shark science and conservation. Congratulations to our lab members John Swenson, Jeremy Vaudo, and Geoffrey Walker on outstanding presentations! And a huge shoutout to @blueresources for hosting a spectacular event! We also had a fantastic time seeing our sister SOSF centers @sharkeducationcentre and @darrosresearchcentre! We had the opportunity to take a group of students from The Village School of Naples out on the water for a hands-on marine science experience they won’t forget 🦈🌊 After learning in the classroom with Mrs. Jasczak, students stepped onto the boat and applied that knowledge in real time identifying species, understanding behavior, and helping collect real data with @nsu_sharkresearch @guyharveyocean @saveourseasfoundation Together, they safely pulled in and studied both a Bull shark and a Nurse shark, turning what they’ve learned into something tangible. But what made the day unforgettable… The seniors pulled in the final line of the day and brought in the nurse shark themselves. A capstone moment. The kind of memory that stays with them long after graduation. This is what experiential learning looks like, where classroom knowledge meets real-world application, and students become active participants in the learning process. We love partnering with schools to create meaningful, outdoor learning experiences that go far beyond a traditional field trip. #marinescience #shark #florida #wakethewild #fieldtrip by @nsu_sharkresearch
Five species. One unforgettable classroom. Today we partnered with Nova Southeastern University, Surf Skate Science, The Guy Harvey Foundation, and Save Our Seas Foundation for a real-world shark tagging expedition… and the ocean showed off. 🦈 Hammerhead 🦈 Bull Shark 🦈 Lemon Shark 🦈 Nurse Sharks (2!) 🐢 Loggerhead Turtles 🐬 Dolphins cruising by Hands-on science. Did you know that tiger sharks' stripes are vibrant while they are young but fade as they grow? Volunteers on some recent trips with our shark tagging education and research program had the chance to experience these beautiful patterns first-hand! Thank you to our recent volunteers from @surfskatescience @novahsofficial @flanagan_high_falcons @jackandjill_gftl by @nsu_sharkresearch
Tortuga was a splash, but don’t worry… the tide will roll back in next year! 🌊😉 Until then, you can support our mission and help protect the ocean by donating to Rock The Ocean! 100% of donations go to Conservation Village Partners like us!
