“Sink? or Swim”
Acrylic paint and snake shed on stretched reclaimed denim
(exact dimensions uncertain)
Spring 2026
•
This year, at the second annual Pride showcase hosted by @blackcowcoffeeco and curated by @carefulstranger, I had the privilege to share with the world one of my newest and most involved works. It’s different from my norm, I’d say. But in a way that is revitalizing.
•
Sink? or Swim pays homage to the collective efforts and suffering of those that came before us. Without them, we wouldn’t be where we are today. LGBT+ rights pioneers, artists, educators, doctors, and every-day people envisioned a world that was safer and more full of love than their own. With that vision and a fist full of rage, people died so that one day, we could swim. Sink? or Swim is a reminder to keep fighting. It’s a yin and yang of light in the dark; a light at the end of the tunnel. The masses revel in their freedom in the open water above the fallen many who fought for and maintained the coral reefs. If we fail to remember the efforts of those that came before us, our foundation crumbles. Take their efforts as motivation to keep going. Existence is resistance. Community is strength. Conversation is change. Don’t stop growing.

Since this is a piece made to remember those that came before us, this painting as a whole is dedicated to Autumn Lin: a beloved professor in the SUNY New Paltz painting and drawing department, who passed shortly after the Spring 2026 semester concluded. As artists and students, we owe our educators thanks for the guidance they give us in not only our practice, but in life. This painting began as a project Autumn assigned called ‘metamorphosis’ to her figure drawing classes. In my class’s final critique, she told many of us to revisit our work over the next week and send her the final. She passed before that one week extension was up. It’s saddening to think that she didn’t get to see the final breadth of her students’ work, especially since she was so focused on our growth. I know she would have been excited to see how I pulled this piece together in the end, and happy to know how much it’s helped me grow. Thank you, Autumn Lin.

“Freakshow/Bamboo Bones”
Oil on Canvas, 24in x 50in
Spring 2025

I never got around to posting this piece when it really mattered. I’m sharing it now to tell you I was invited by @carefulstranger to be a part of a showcase at @blackcowcoffeeco for a second time! Pride month is a time we dedicate to community, creativity, and freedom. Please take some time to join us in celebrating pride through artwork and community at Black Cow on June 24th, 7:00 where you’ll find artwork by myself and many other amazing artists. If you can’t make it for the reception, please visit when you can and get a lavender oat milk latte on my behalf while you’re there! ☕️

At last year’s show, my painting Freakshow/Bamboo Bones (pictured) made its debut. I was honored to have the opportunity to share a piece that means so much to me alongside other queer artists working, living, and breathing in the Hudson Valley. Five years ago, I never would have expected to have shared such a vulnerable part of myself with so many people, and to feel so empowered because of it. With a heart full of gratitude, I am obliged to thank Black Cow for wanting to continue displaying my piece beyond the duration of last year’s show. i’m grateful to have been given such visibility as an artist, and as a mermaid. 🏳️‍🌈❤️‍🔥🏳️‍⚧️

and don’t worry, you still have time to visit! it’s not going anywhere anytime soon :)

“don’t let them break you
don’t let them tell you who you are
doesn’t matter where you come from
you’ll always have a floor to sleep on
and with your bamboo bones,
nervous energy
blind ambition, skin of your teeth
push back, push back, push back,
with every word and every breath
what God doesn’t give to you
you’ve got to go and get for yourself”

This piece was not meant to become what it has, but there’s no way I could have ignored its purpose.

Been staring at this old piece on my wall. A painful reminder of taking Color during my first year at New Paltz. I hated making this. But it’s fun to look at, and it’s still one of my favorites today.

Going back to my roots and growing out my scales
(4x6 intaglio prints)
October-November 2024

After nearly five years, I’ve finally revisited my fascination (or dare I say obsession) with mermaids through the painstakingly beautiful process of intaglio. This is a printmaking technique I never thought I’d have the opportunity to use. For years I have admired prints labeled as “etchings” but never quite understood how they were made until now. While I did not accomplish the original vision I had set out to create with this piece, I still came out the other end of this assignment with something I’m extremely proud of.

been obsessed with this song enough to make a linocut print inspired by it. Indoor Foxes just released their Sadolescence EP a few days ago with this song on it and i’ve had the EP on repeat since.

GIANT shoutout to Avery for this assignment and all the others she gave us over the Spring 2024 semester. Almost every class, I came at her with a mountain of questions and ideas and she never once turned down the opportunity to help me learn. Inside and outside of assignments, she was there to help us explore every idea we had, no matter how crazy they seemed (she let me put rat bones in clay to see if they would burn out in a bisque fire and leave an impression in its place 🫢). Not only that, but she obviously gave us the coolest assignments, with SO much room to express our individuality. Literally couldn’t have asked for a better ceramics professor 🏺🖤
