Beautiful Sun Mat by Joy Wilfred💛 A very special piece, handwoven from naturally dyed pandanus and measuring an impressive 140cm across. by @numbulwar
93 years young and still going out on Country to collect pandanus for weaving. Pandanus grows abundantly around Numbulwar and is used to create fibre works such as sun mats, wulbung (baskets) and Yir (dilly bags). Collecting the leaves, stripping back the fibres and transforming this humble material into works of art requires years of skill and knowledge. At 92, Mawugumain makes it look easy. #numbulwar #numbulwararts #arnhemland #aboriginalart #pandanusweaving by @numbulwar
“We want to share our culture with the world, through art.” - Yulki Nunggumajbarr Discover Numbulwar. Where red dirt meets turquoise waters. Where spear fishing and ceremonies remain a central part of life. The fibre artists of Numbulwar are bold and brilliant, and we want to share our culture with you. by @numbulwar
Ghost Net Yir (Dilly Bags) by Virginia Wilfred. Nunggayinbala people have been making and using dilly bags for thousands of years for practical and ceremonial purposes. More recently, artists in Numbulwar have begun creating them from repurposed ghost nets, bringing traditional weaving practices together with contemporary, found materials. by @numbulwar
Yesterday out bush at Harris Creek… Artists spent the day on Country, drawing, harvesting pandanus, collecting bush foods, cooking and sharing stories together by the creek. A special day away from the studio💛 by @numbulwar

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we share the passing of Ms J Nundhirribala. Ms J dedicated much of her life to the Numbulwar community as a respected health worker, master weaver, teacher, translator and cultural leader. To us, she was the mother of our art centre. For more than a decade, she tirelessly advocated for the establishment of an art centre in Numbulwar. Her determination, leadership and unwavering belief in the strength of our artists culminated in the opening of Numbulwar Numburindi Arts in 2019. Without her vision and dedication, our art centre would not exist today. Ms J Nundhirribala also served as an ANKA Director for seven years, where she championed Aboriginal artists and communities across the Northern Territory. Throughout her life, she was deeply committed to passing cultural knowledge to the next generation, ensuring that the weaving traditions, language and stories of her people would continue. Her legacy lives on in every artist she inspired, every student she taught, and every woven work that carries the knowledge she shared. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Ms J’s family, loved ones and the entire Numbulwar community during this difficult time. Thank you, J. Your strength, generosity and vision will never be forgotten ❤️ by @numbulwar
On Monday, Rose Wilfred and Megan Wilfred leave Numbulwar to represent our community at the National Indigenous Art Fair in Sydney. ✈️ For our artists, reaching Sydney is a two-day journey from our remote community in south-east Arnhem Land. Last year, Rose Wilfred and Lilian Joshua took part in the @nationalindigenousartfair ’s professional development program, exploring 3D printing, screen printing and curatorial practice through workshops and tours at Artbank, the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Macquarie Collection. Let’s do it again this year! For artists from remote communities, travel is about so much more than getting from A to B. It’s an opportunity to share culture, build professional networks, learn new skills, and represent Numbulwar beyond Country. As part of our EOFY campaign, we’re raising funds to help our artists access the opportunities they have earned. We’re so proud to share that Virginia Wilfred’s giant bulpu has been selected for the 2026 Northern Territory Art Award by Darwin Visual Arts. Her striking work - made from ghost net, acrylic, pandanus and chicken wire - will be presented at Charles Darwin University’s Midpul Gallery. 📍 29 May – 11 July 2026 Bulpu is a traditional Yolŋu dilly bag, used to carry bush tucker and everyday items. Traditionally woven from pandanus and natural fibres, it is here reimagined through contemporary materials and bold colour - reflecting the innovation of Virginia while staying grounded in cultural knowledge. A powerful transformation of discarded ghost nets into cultural expression and resilience. 💙 #Numbulwar #VirginiaWilfred #GhostNets #NTArtAward #DarwinVisualArts MidpulGallery IndigenousArt by @numbulwar
