A Symbol of Shared Struggle: Rather than an exclusively Hungarian leader, Slovaks see Rákóczi as a prominent regional leader. His uprising’s motto, “Pro Patria et Libertate” (For Country and Liberty), resonated deeply with Slovak serfs and peasants. Because he fought against the centralized absolutism of the Habsburgs in Vienna, he is respected as a defender of local regional liberties. Known in Slovak as František II. Rákoci, his memory entered Slovak folklore, traditional songs, and historical ballads. He and his Kuruc soldiers were often idealized as champions of social justice. In modern Slovak historiography and public memory, Francis II Rákóczi is viewed by Slovaks with respect and sympathy, occupying an honorable and positive place in their shared history. #numismatic #rákóczi #history #františekiirákoci #rákócziferenc by @numismatic_treasures

$János Zsigmond (English: John Sigismund Zápolya; 1540–1571) was the first Prince of Transylvania whose reign transformed the region into a global pioneer of religious tolerance and cultural advancement. Faced with a fractured Hungary caught between the Habsburgs and the Ottoman Empire, his greatest achievement was the Edict of Torda (1568), a landmark decree that established Europe’s first state-level freedom of religious conscience, granting equal rights to Catholics, Lutherans, Calvinists, and Unitarians. By peacefully renouncing his claim to the Hungarian throne in the Treaty of Speyer (1570), he established the independent Principality of Transylvania, ensuring local autonomy. A passionate humanist, he also founded the higher school in Alba Iulia (Gyulafehérvár),ultimately donating his personal library and wealth to secure the future of Transylvanian education and culture. #numismatic #transilvania #transylvanian #erdély #princeoftransylvania by @numismatic_treasures$

Busójárás is an ancient six-day winter-ending carnival held annually in Mohács, Hungary, rooted in a blend of South Slavic pagan traditions and dramatic local folklore. Originally brought to the region in the late 17th century by the Šokci, a South Slavic Catholic ethnic group migrating from the Balkans, the festival is fundamentally a pagan spring-awakening and fertility ritual where participants dressed as terrifying “Busós”—wearing menacing hand-carved wooden masks, shaggy sheepskin cloaks, and loud cowbells—to scare away the literal and spiritual chill of winter. Over time, this seasonal ritual became deeply intertwined with a popular patriotic legend claiming that local villagers disguised themselves in these horrific costumes to terrify and drive out occupying Ottoman Turkish soldiers from the town. Today, this unique cultural heritage is recognized by UNESCO, culminating every year on Shrove Tuesday when a massive bonfire is lit in the town square to burn a coffin representing winter, symbolically welcoming the rebirth of spring. #numismatic #busójárás #mohács #winter #carnival by @numismatic_treasures

The architecture of Peleș Castle is a breathtaking blend of European styles, anchored primarily in the German Neo-Renaissance tradition.
Its design was heavily influenced by King Carol I’s German heritage (the House of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen), resulting in an exterior characterized by sharp wooden framing, intricate hand-painted murals, and soaring spires. However, as you step inside, the castle transforms into an eclectic showcase of global design, featuring Italian Renaissance, Gothic Revival, Baroque, and Rococo elements across its 160 rooms. #numismatic #pelescastle #peleș #regelecarol #castlesofeurope by @numismatic_treasures

One winter evening, King Matthias Corvinus disguised himself as a poor student and slipped into a Transylvanian tavern to see how the local nobles treated his people.
When a wealthy magistrate arrived and demanded that everyone bow, the disguised king remained seated, prompting the furious nobleman to sentence him to clean the tavern’s filthy stables. Matthias quietly worked through the night, but used a piece of charcoal to write a hidden message on the stable wall: “King Matthias was here, but justice was not.”
The next morning, the king returned to the town square in his full royal robes and crown, summoned the terrified magistrate, and ordered him to read the charcoal message aloud before stripping him of his title for abusing the poor. #numismatic #matthiascorvinus #erdély #transilvania #tales by @numismatic_treasures

Initially established as a vital strategic crossing point over the Mureș River and first recorded in official documents in 1247, the historic city of Makó demonstrated extraordinary resilience by literally rising from its own ashes after being completely devastated and set ablaze by Ottoman and Tatar forces in 1552, 1596, and 1686, subsequently ascending in 1730 to become the proud administrative capital of Csanád County and experiencing a spectacular demographic and urban boom during the late 19th century—when it outgrew many of today’s major regional cities—as it transformed into a powerful agrarian economic hub fueled by the fertile alluvial soil that allowed for the cultivation of its world-famous red onions (Makói vöröshagyma), a local identity symbol so profound that it decisively influenced the town’s future urban design, while simultaneously gifting the world universal pioneers such as American media tycoon Joseph Pulitzer and the legendary engineer József Galamb, who co-designed the revolutionary Ford Model T automobile, all before navigating a turbulent 20th century marked by the tragic loss of its vibrant Jewish merchant community during the Holocaust, the stripping of its county seat status, and the deliberate suppression of its industrial growth under the post-WWII communist regime due to its sensitive proximity to the Yugoslavian border, only to ultimately reinvent itself in the modern era as a premier international thermal spa destination celebrated for its healing waters and the breathtaking organic architectural masterpieces designed by maestro Imre Makovecz. #numismatic #makó #makóihagyma #makóhagymafesztivál #makoi 🇭🇺 by @numismatic_treasures

World War I resulted in an estimated 15 to 22 million deaths and over 21 million wounded, making it one of the deadliest conflicts in human history. The total casualty count—combining those killed, wounded, or missing—reaches a staggering 37 to 40 million people.
The high mortality rates were driven by technologically advanced warfare (such as heavy artillery, machine guns, and poison gas) paired with outdated military tactics, as well as rampant disease, famine, and geopolitical atrocities. #numismatic #worldwar1history #worldwar1 #war #historicalwar by @numismatic_treasures

The Boston Tea Party was a historic political protest that took place on December 16, 1773, in Boston, Massachusetts during the period leading up to the American Revolution. It was a significant event in the colonists’ resistance against British taxation policies and played a crucial role in the eventual fight for American independence. During this time, the British government had imposed various taxes on the American colonies without their consent, leading to widespread dissatisfaction and opposition among the colonists. One of these taxes was the Tea Act of 1773, which granted the British East India Company a monopoly on tea sales in the colonies and allowed them to sell tea at a reduced price, undercutting local tea merchants.

Between 7 and 10 p.m. on the night of December 16, 1773, a large group of men led by the Sons of Liberty boarded the ships in the harbor. Around 46 tons of tea were tipped into the Boston Harbor, nearly worth £10,000 in 1773. As a result, the British shut down the harbor and implemented the 1774 “Intolerable Act,” also know as the Boston Port Act. This further enraged the colonists, hardening their resolve against the British, sparking a series of events that led to the American Revolution in Massachusetts. #numismatic #politicalprotest #taxation #revolt #boston by @numismatic_treasures

$The formal coronation of Franz Joseph I as the King of Hungary, which took place on June 8, 1867, at the historic Matthias Church in Buda, served as the ultimate political culmination of the Austro-Hungarian Compromise (Ausgleich), effectively transforming a fractured and financially depleted Austrian Empire into a dual constitutional monarchy after decades of bitter hostility stemming from the Emperor’s brutal suppression of the Hungarian War of Independence in 1849. Because the Hungarian elite had long refused to recognize the legitimacy of a monarch who had not sworn an oath to their ancient constitution or been anointed with the revered Crown of Saint Stephen, this elaborate ceremony—which also saw the immensely popular Empress Elisabeth (“Sisi”) crowned alongside her husband—was a vital act of symbolic reconciliation that pacified Hungarian nationalist demands and initiated an era of rapid economic and cultural growth. #numismatic #franzjoseph #korona #ferencjózsef #austriahungary 🇦🇹-🇭🇺 by @numismatic_treasures$
