There is an ongoing Third World Newsreel retrospective of the work of Christine Choy at Anthology Film Archives and DCTV's Firehouse Cinema (Sept 9-16 2026)). MIAP is grateful to TWN for recognizing the work of our students, who have helped preserve these very important works, and for programming them at these timely moments. Thank you for mentoring our interns! We are also glad to see Professor Bill Brand mentioned in the credits. Follow the social media of these great MIAP partners or to visit their websites to learn about schedules and tickets. The program will close with a screening of "Mississippi Triangle" and a Q&A with Yuet Fung Ho, Associate Producer; Professor Josslyn Luckett from Cinema Studies at NYU, and JT Takagi, TWN. by @nyumiap
Join us for a screening of “Mississippi Triangle” by Christine Choy, Worth Long, Allan Siegel, Robert A. Nakamura as a part of The Christine Choy Retrospective. Producer JT Takagi Executive Director, Third World Newsreel Dr. Josslyn Luckett, Screenwriter, Scholar, Cinema Studies Professor at NYU (Sept 16 only) “Mississippi Triangle” is an intimate portrait of life in the Mississippi Delta, where Chinese, African Americans and whites live in a complex world of cotton, labor, and racial conflict. The history of the Chinese community, originally brought to the South to work on cotton plantations after the Civil War, is framed against the harsh realities of civil rights, religion, politics, and class in the South. Rare historical footage and interviews of Delta residents are combined to create this unprecedented document of inter-ethnic relations in the American South. When: Monday, September 14 at 6:00 PM Wednesday, September 16 at 6:30 PM Where: DCTV Firehouse Cinema, New York Tickets: Link in bio. 🎟️ (Use the promo code “pioneer” for a 20% discount online) Special thanks to our sponsor NYWIFT Women’s Film Preservation Fund by @nyumiap
This series is programmed by Lucy Talbot Allen (MIAP '25), Director of Communications and Development at Anthology Film Archives - Sexual Cinéma Vérité: the Multi-Media Resource Center in Context Anthology Film Archives October 16-20. In 1968, a coalition of sex-positive, politically progressive San Francisco religious leaders and homophile activists founded the National Sex Forum. Led by the Methodist Rev. Dr. Ted McIlvenna, the NSF began producing films, and was soon supplemented by a distribution arm called the Multi-Media Resource Center. The MMRC distributed both NSF films – most of them directed by McIlvenna’s friend Laird Sutton – and erotic avant-garde cinema by filmmakers from the Bay Area and beyond. The MMRC was radical not only in its ethos of sexual freedom and openness as compatible with Christianity, but also in its use of experimental film as a form of sex education. This series, guest-programmed by Lucy Talbot Allen (MIAP '25), will introduce a modern audience to a host of works that have rarely (if ever) been shown theatrically. In these programs, films distributed by the MMRC are paired with those that could have been: avant-garde, educational, and agit-prop films from the 1960s and ’70s that share a sensibility of free sexual expression. We have concluded a week of collaborative work, workshops, and exchanges with our Mexican colleagues from the Purepecha, Tsotsil Maya, Ch’enalvo’, and Nahua Indigenous communities, brought together by our dear colleagues Paco Vásquez and Miguel Cruz / Promedios de Comunicación Comunitaria. For many participants, it was deeply moving to clean and digitize these tapes, which preserve the memory of the Zapatista movement, the enduring struggle of Indigenous peoples for their lands, the organizing efforts of women, and the histories of families and communities. There is still much work ahead, but we move forward with enthusiasm. Our deepest thanks to everyone who contributed their time, energy, commitment, and care throughout this week. Together, we are stronger. @alternativa_intercanvi @nyumiap @juana_srz @raposita_roja by @nyumiap
