Thanks to @santaclarawines for putting on a fun event and for having me! And a special thanks to @beer.run.fun for all of the hard work from prepping to staging to pouring all the way through breakdown. It was great to see so many long time friends and to make new acquaintances! These kinds of events are a lot of work on many levels, so thanks to all who made it happen! Cheers! by @oakenmoonbrewing

It’s hard to believe, after the extremely erratic winter we just had, that spring has only just begun. In light of the absolute record shattering sustained heat that we endured through March, it’s easy to forget that it’s just April 1. This date is historically around the peak of the Sierra snowpack, which is dismally low. This isn’t as bad as 2015, but it’s right up there with it. This is no April Fools joke. Here in Morgan Hill, we went through almost a week of 80 F temps, followed by almost a week of 90 F + temps, followed by a week of 80 F + temps. Brutal for the month of March. I guess there’s Miracle March and there’s Parched March. The hills are turning gold already. The south-facing sides are senescent and I’m all heady on what it all means. It was all so fast as we scream into the dry season. The wet and the dry seasons have their times, but it’s irritating when they don’t each do their thing. Saisons De La Vie Spring 2026 is as dry as they come. It might as well be. We’re in the midst of one the driest Marches any of us have seen in our lives, and I hope not to see another as dry as this one. Or do I? #oakenmoonbrewing #stainlessales #stainlessagedales #morganhilldrinks #mixedfermentationsourbeer by @oakenmoonbrewing

In 2008 Leah and I attended a food-beer pairing event in the northern Sierra that was revelatory: alongside food from Pangaea in Quincy, I was introduced to barrel aged sours by Russian River Brewing Company. At that point I was 2 years into my brewing journey, and upon my first sips of sour beers, I knew I was going to venture into that realm as a brewer. Creating barrel aged sours is intensive: it requires barrels, proper bugs, real estate and time. It wasn’t until 2013 that my circumstances allowed for me to begin what has unfolded to be a remarkable sour journey. In 2013 a Running Shop and Hops friend of mine introduced me to Tart of Darkness by The Bruery and I was instantly enamored by it. Here was a sour stout: a tart dark ale with a tantalizing flavor profile. In December 2013 I procured a retired 10 gallon wine barrel from Relya Wood Winery (R & W Winery) and I knew what I was going to fill it with. I created a simple stout recipe that has gone on to have a life of its own as my Dry Season Stout. But back to the point: I brewed up a bunch of stout, put it in that first barrel of mine, inoculated it, waited a year, and Mariana Trench was born. Yesterday, some good friends and I were fortunate enough to have a 2018 bottle of Rum barrel aged Tart of Darkness alongside the latest iteration of Oaken Moon’s Mariana Trench. It was a very special opportunity that put me right back to some very inspirational beginnings. Thanks to @crosscheck88 for the bottle of Tart of Darkness and for some other special offerings. It’s hard to believe that I’ve been brewing sours for a dozen years, and that I’m about to hit 20 years of brewing in general. Cheers! #oakenmoonbrewing #barrelagedbeer #barrelagedsour by @oakenmoonbrewing
Some fine bourbons and beer… by @oakenmoonbrewing
Happy Solstice, all! I know I’m a week late in posting this, but the Oaken Moon Annual Winter Solstice Bonfire was a blast and it was a fitting tribute to the longest nights of the year. Much appreciation to Manny @cochis2.0 for all of his work on food for the event, and to others who contributed in various ways, from bringing more food to more fuel for the fire! The main Oaken Moon beer featured at the bonfire was the Estate IPA, of which much was poured! I hope that it’s been a great holiday season for you all as 2025 winds down. Time flies and the most that we can do is try to soak it all in. I’m thankful for family and friends and for living in a beautiful community, one that includes oaks, acorn woodpeckers and bolete mushrooms, amongst many others. Cheers!!! by @oakenmoonbrewing
Happy Halloween to all!!! Enjoy a fresh hoppy beer if you can, because tis the time of year for bursting fresh hop flavors here in the northern hemisphere! May you have a spooky (yet fun) Halloween!!! #oakenmoonbrewing #morganhilldrinks #craftbeer #ipa #westcoastipa #morganhill by @oakenmoonbrewing
A Vière involves quite the journey that takes months before I even touch a cluster of grapes. It’s a journey that involves ale, stainless steel, wood, grapes, juice, yeast and bacteria and time, amongst other things. Now that golden ale sits nestled with different grape juice varietals in a range of vessels, time is once again of the essence. The grape juice will ferment, then age along with the ale. Aging some in barrels and some in stainless steel allows for infinite blending opportunities when the time comes to release the final products. If all goes well, in 2026 we’ll be sipping on a new Incandescence, a new 20 Year Brewversary Vière and yet another Vière containing all three grape varietals from this year’s harvest. Take the journey, no matter where it starts or where it ends… Sante! #oakenmoonbrewing #viere #beerandwine #barrelagedbeer #barrelaged #morganhill #craftbeer #specialtybeer by @oakenmoonbrewing
