The SS Europa was introduced to the waves in 1930 as a revolutionary piece of German maritime engineering. As one of the first passenger ships to go to sea with a bulbous bow, along with her sister Bremen, both ships were among the fastest ever built at the time, and would successfully clench the Blue Riband for Germany for the first time since 1903.

After the Second World War, Europa found herself in the hands of the French Line in exchange for the loss of the Normandie. The ship received updates inside and out, and was re-introduced in 1950 as Liberté. She would sail under the French flag all the way until 1964.

Which do you prefer - Europa or Liberté?

France's legendary Ship of Light, SS Normandie. Her palatial Art Deco interiors were both celebrated and somewhat controversial, as some passengers found the lavishness overwhelming and preferred a more understated sense of luxury. Would you have sailed on her, or did you prefer the interiors of Queen Mary?

#OnThisDay in 1942, the RMS Queen Mary, acting during the war as HMT Queen Mary, collided with one of her escort ships, the cruiser HMS Curacoa, while on a zigzag course off the coast of Ireland. The cruiser was sliced clean in two, and 338 lives were lost as a result of the incident. Bound by her orders, Queen Mary was given no choice but to forge ahead without rescuing survivors, and the incident would be kept secret as a matter of wartime security until after the War's end.
