I recently had my broadside painting of the South African tugboat WOLRAAD WOLTEMADE framed with a robust brushed metal frame, including beautiful anti-reflective, UV-protective glass. The outer dimensions of the painting are 54 x 86 cm. by @oceanlinerart

As an artist, it’s always important for me to frame a piece every now and then to see where I stand with my work. A framed piece feels completely finished and ready to be displayed. I’ve taken my Wolraad Woltemade broadside watercolor to the framer, and I’m looking forward to picking it up soon at @kunstuitleenveenstravanwesten . At the time of writing, the Wolraad piece is still available for purchase. The work measures 39 x 71 cm. by @oceanlinerart

Watercolor lighthouse Nieuwe Sluis (Breskens), the Netherlands.

Besides my paintings of ships, I also have a great passion for lighthouses. I've started a series in a smaller format (A4) featuring my favorite lighthouses. This watercolor is currently for sale. Send me a DM for a quote.

Gramma Lee T. Moran; a modern maritime workhorse

This commission given by Moran Towing was made in honor of the chairman’s wife. The painting therefore has the atmosphere of a sunset and the ship is sailing away from the viewer. These choices process the story into my visual language. Moran’s beautiful color scheme with the signature ‘M’ was a great pleasure to paint for me as a maritime artist. The Gramma Lee T. Moran is a symbol of America’s towing industry at it’s finest. I was honored to create this painting for one of the oldest and most respected maritime towing companies in the United States.

Framing watercolor OPDR LISBOA

I have chosen a nice green passe-partout and a golden brushed metal frame for my OPDR LISBOA painting. The green and gold matches beautifully with the tones of the watercolor! I will post the result when it is ready, stay tuned. by @oceanlinerart

OPDR Lisboa

Vlissingen, The Netherlands, located at the estuary of the the Westerschelde and the Noordzee, is and remains one of my greatest sources of inspiration as a Maritime Artist. Nowhere in the world does shipping sail by so beautifully in one large, picturesque panorama of sea, sky and countless colors. When everything comes together with a beautiful ship in the leading role, there is a moment of euphoria. I wanted to capture that moment in this work. How beautiful it is when a yellow ship beautifully matches a green sea that convincingly breaks on the beach. The sound of the wind made you almost see this spectacle in a trance, just you and the elements. The stacking of containers almost creates its own choreography, highlighted by all their different colors. A perfect afternoon in Vlissingen! The work also shows that the shipping industry is constantly changing, the old German shipping company OPDR - Oldenburg-Portugiesische Dampfschiffs-Rhederei - founded in 1882, no longer exists. The OPDR Lisboa has exchanged its yellow livery for an inconspicuous one, the pride is gone, a thing of the past. One of my tasks as a contemporary marine artist is also to capture modern merchant ships.

In addition to the great oceanliners of the past, I also like to paint other ships. In this case the ferry FRIESLAND. The ship is depicted on it’s way to the Dutch Wadden island of Terschelling. I am proud that the atmosphere of the Wadden Sea has been well captured in this work. If the ship, the sky and the sea are in balance and reinforce each other, I am a happy artist!

Which ship would you like to have a painting of? Contact me with your personal wishes. I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

Willem Ruys

When the Willem Ruys was ordered by the Rotterdamsche Lloyd in 1938, no one could suspect that the ship would eventually be launched in 1946. The ship remained the entire war on the ramp of De Schelde shipyard. Despite heavy bombing on Vlissingen during World War II, the ship miraculously was only lightly damaged. After the liberation, the fresh water installations of the Willem Ruys provided the citizens with clean drinking water. As a result of the inundation of Walcheren (1944), Willem Ruys’ lifeboats came in handy for transport over water. The Willem Ruys was built as a liner for the Dutch Indies and was later used as a cruise ship. In 1965 the ship was sold to the Italian Flotta Lauro, who renamed her Achille Lauro. During a cruise to Antwerp in 1993, the ship sailed past Vlissingen one last time. A year and a half later, the ship caught fire off the coast of Somalia and sank.

Maasdam
Watercolor om Canson paper
35 x 49,4 cm [SOLD]🔴

This painting depicts the Maasdam in Southampton. The tug/tender Calshot assists this Holland America Line beauty. The crane in the foreground gives a nice depth to the painting. One wonder what the port staff are talking about? The Cirrus clouds give a nice tension and movement to the painting. From this point of view, the beautiful lines of the Maasdam come into their own.

History

The Maasdam (4) of the Holland America Line was launched in 1952. The ship maintained a regular service between Rotterdam and New York and / or Montreal via Le Havre, Southampton, Cobh and Galway. Together with her sister Ryndam (2), these ships were called ‘The Economy Twins’, because the majority of the ship was Tourist Class, and only a small number of cabins First Class. This was an entirely new concept for that time. In 1968 Maasdam was sold to Polish Ocean Lines and named Stefan Batory. Along with the Queen Elizabeth 2 she was the last transatlantic passenger ship in regular service. She operated between Gdynia and Montreal via Rotterdam and Tilbury. In that capacity, the ship was a regular visitor at the Wilhelminakade in Rotterdam, which was ofcourse very familiar to her.
