On view in Gathering’s downstairs viewing room are new paintings by Oda Sønderland. These paintings mark a significant moment in Oda’s practice, as her first works in oil and a return to the figure. The new medium brings a heightened depth and luminosity to the paintings, which feel distinctly cinematic and psychologically charged. @oda_sonderland Gathering is open today from 11am–6pm. FINAL WEEK: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘯 Join us this Saturday, 1 August, for a finissage of Oda Sønderland’s solo exhibition, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘯, including a live performance by the artist. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear Sønderland perform the poems that bring the vivid narrative behind 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘯 to life. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘯 features a series of sculptures comprised of found objects, in dialogue with a suite of intricate watercolour paintings. Through a series of accompanying poems, Sønderland reveals the life and demise of a series of little-known creatures. Transcribed into human language, the poems reflect what scarce information we have on the mysterious nature of these entities, while also illuminating their final death scenes. These images show the artist Oda Sønderland during the trip where she discovered the first sculpture of the series, 𝘏𝘪𝘱 𝘉𝘰𝘯𝘦. @oda_sonderland Image I: Oda Sønderland, 𝘏𝘪𝘱 𝘉𝘰𝘯𝘦, 2026. “Each painting depicts a creature’s death within its own landscape. The exhibition imagines each creature constructing its body from the environment in which it exists. I regard them as portraits, each with its own personality and history. I wanted every creature to remain physically possible according to our current understanding of science and matter. By establishing those limits, I could allow reality to guide my imagination. They are self-aware beings whose experiences resemble our own, although their bodies operate according to different physical laws.” #odaiselinsønderland Oda Iselin Sønderland’s (@oda_sonderland) multimedia exhibition The Matrician brings watercolours into dialogue with sculptural remains and performances of her own poems, the exhibition imagines ethereal life forces. Elephant speaks with the Norwegian-Irish artist about Japanese visual culture, science, ecological collapse and the truths contained within speculative fiction. The Matrician is on display at Gathering (@gathering.london) until the first of August. Words by Sayori Radda (@sayori_radda). by @oda_sonderland

Compass Dry the waters Of the blackened void Light the little fires Heavy roots fold Little seeds of star Gather round me Grow to a spear An all seeing sphere Pointed to the sun All the mirrors burn Wake the one who Await for my return Veil of darkest night A million blinking eyes Sail across the cradle Arise to then demise Betrayal of the flesh Or the lasting suns grand gesture turned To all hope burned Slowly, with wind Rain fills the pond All the weight of sorrow Crushing the bond From the exhibition «The Matrician» at GATHERING London. Spell Sphere of glowing ice Gasping all of sea We both share this meal The two of you and me Silken, blue seal Standing on the hill Jeweled water drops Her voice brings a thrill As my coat slips Gliding through her harp Left in the palm Eyes pierce sharp She calls me beautiful Special and rare Sparking my nerves A spell sung so clear Jelly balls of blue Sucking in black Pink chasm open Rows of pearly white Spinning disc of fire Hungry as can be A black hole open devouring him and me From the exhibition «The Matrician» at GATHERING London.
