I think I figured out what kind of DJ I actually am this weekend. This couple gave me almost no direction. No playlist. No long list of songs. Every time I asked what they liked, I basically got, “everything.” Their only real direction was just go DJ. Which, weirdly, made me nervous. Then the doors opened and I stopped thinking about it. The second cocktail hour ended, I wanted everyone walking into that room to know this wasn’t going to be a normal wedding. Dance music while they walked in. High energy intros. A dance set before dinner. Then we brought it back down, let everybody eat and hang out, and when the dance floor opened back up, I just let it rip. I played shit I haven’t touched in years. Made mashups on the fly. Jumped genres. Took songs from their childhood TV shows and mixed them with songs they probably raged to in college. I took chances I normally wouldn’t take. And every single time, they came with me. At some point I realized I wasn’t thinking about DJing a wedding anymore. I was just DJing. Reading the room. Trusting myself. Playing whatever I thought would take the party somewhere better. And I think that’s my lane. I want the unhinged weddings. The couples who want the whole reception to feel alive. Who trust me to break a few rules, get weird with it and take their crowd somewhere they haven’t been before. I can be polished when I need to be. Professional when it matters. But I’m probably never going to be your traditional wedding DJ. I don’t want the traditional wedding. I want the one people are still talking about because nobody really knows what the hell happened on that dance floor.
