OPENING TONIGHT! ‘New figures, new grounds’ opens tonight (Friday 30 Oct, 6-8pm) at Visual Diary in Brunswick. I’m exhibiting three small stitched textiles made in 2021-22, and a new wall drawing made with flowering weeds and medical tape. Curated by Rie Delange, this exhibition considers the relationship between bodily limits and artistic practice. When artists’ established ways of making are disrupted by changes in health, how do we adapt to new limits? How can we find sustainable and meaningful ways to continue? – EXHIBITION: ‘New figures, new grounds’ Opening event: Friday 30th Oct 6-8pm Exhibition dates: 31st Oct - 15th Nov Gallery hours: Thurs - Sun, 11am-2pm Visual Diary 10 Frith Street Brunswick – Asha Maria Dare, Anna Dunnill, Marcel Feillafe, Ashika Harper, Elyss McCleary, Ruth O’Leary, Pip Ryan, Jessica Schwientek, Elise Sheehan, Alex Sinclair, curated by Rie Delange, accompanying text by Katie Paine. — Images: 1 – Anna Dunnill, ‘Flower arrangement’, 2026, detail 2 – Anna Dunnill, ‘Drawing my way out (textile 2)’, 2021-22 3 – Exhibition poster with artwork details by Jessica Schwientek (top) and Elyss McCleary (bottom) by @okayampersand
Excited to share that my curatorial project ‘New figures, new grounds’ opens Friday 30th October, 6–8pm at Visual Diary 🖤 ‘New figures, new grounds’ considers the relationship between bodily limits and artistic practice, exploring how changes in health can disrupt established ways of making and how artists may or may not negotiate this landscape. Art practice can occupy a complicated dual space: it can be a ground for exploration, research, curiosity and expression, but also a site entangled with career opportunities and institutional expectations. What happens when disruptions to health mean the methods, pace or identity we engage with can no longer be supported? What occurs when the timeline shifts and there is a rupture in mobility, when the body itself encounters limitations interrupting our goals and expectations? How does this change our relationship to time, labour, identity and artistic possibility? Negotiating practice in altered health circumstances can engender complex feelings and outcomes. Previous methods may become unfeasible, requiring rethinking, while returning to practice can bring both hopes for recovery and pressures of productivity. How do we adapt to new limits within creative making and find sustainable and meaningful ways to return? ‘New figures, new grounds’ brings together varied responses to these complex experiences, exploring what can and cannot be born from this ground Asha Maria Dare, Anna Dunnill, Marcel Feillafe, Ashika Harper, Elyss McCleary, Ruth O’Leary, Pip Ryan, Jessica Schwientek, Elise Sheehan, Alex Sinclair, curated by Rie Delange, accompanying text by Katie Paine @asha_maria_dare @okayampersand @m_wallus01 @ashika_harper @elyss_mccleary @ruth_o.leary @pipryan_ @_only__farms_ @elisesheehan @alex.sinclair.art @rie.delange @dreamsofspeaking @v_i_s_u_a_l_d_i_a_r_y Top image - Jessica Schwientek Bottom image - Elyss McCleary by @okayampersand
⏳ 18 DAYS TO GO! Applications for the Kate Derum & Irene Davies Awards close on 7 September, don’t miss your chance to apply! Let’s revisit 2024 Kate Derum Award winner ‘Gleanings (self-portrait)’ by Anna Dunnill. In this tapestry, Dunnill explores ‘gleaning’, gathering and repurposing things that might otherwise be discarded or overlooked. Thread waste, beads, grass and hair are woven into the work, transforming them into something precious. As the artist describes, “These gleanings, carefully selected and arranged, form a kind of map of myself. They take on an aura of preciousness, jewels made from rubbish.” ❗️ Applications Close 7 September 🔗 Full details on our website via link in bio. - Pictured: Anna Dunnill 'Gleanings (self-portrait)', 2024, silk, hemp, twined cotton, twined wool, waste threads, grass, hair, rice pearls, found metal loop, camellia petal bead, glass beads, tiny stone from Williamstown Beach, cotton warp. 20 x 15 cm. @okayampersand by @okayampersand

I’m so excited to share the new textiles I’ve been making during my residency at correspondences. Stitching, felting, beading, quilting, weaving, drawing, poetry: in considering tenderness I’ve been paying attention to what my brain and body need from my practice. Working intuitively, moving between materials. Picking up treasures from the pavement and the garden. The exhibition also includes a bed-sized quilt that I hand-stitched last year, over the course of nine months. It’s displayed on the floor, a place to rest together.
