She walked into the room without saying a word. The red around her felt like noise, but she remained still—calm, composed, and certain of who she was. People looked at her, waiting for her to explain herself. She simply held their gaze. She had learned that confidence didn’t always have to be loud. Sometimes, it was in the way you stood, the way you carried yourself, and the way you refused to shrink. That day, she didn’t walk in to be noticed. She walked in knowing she already was. ESSENCE Essence explores the quiet beauty of simply being capturing a moment of introspection, softness, and self-awareness. The figure’s gaze and posture suggest a world of thoughts held beneath the surface, while the playful clothing and bold gloves contrast with the stillness of the moment. The work is a reflection on identity, presence, and the parts of ourselves that remain when everything else falls away a celebration of the essence that makes us uniquely who we are. My work is an exploration of the self-both personal and collective. Through painting, I examine the ways memory, identity, and cultural heritage shape our understanding of who we are and where we belong. I am interested in the tension between tradition and modernity, and how individuals navigate these interconnected worlds. Using color, texture, and form, I create visual narratives that draw from personal experiences while speaking to broader human emotions and shared cultural histories. My paintings often combine abstract and figurative elements, allowing me to balance storytelling with interpretation. I want each work to function as both a reflection and an invitation-encouraging viewers to engage with their own memories, experiences, and connections to identity. As a young artist, I see my practice as a journey of continuous discovery and growth. Through art, I hope to create meaningful conversations about culture, belonging, and the experiences that unite us, while developing a visual language that remains authentic to my perspective and generation. - Olatide Amusa by @olatide_amusa
Caption: ‘’For so long, she searched for acceptance in the eyes of others, shrinking pieces of herself to fit expectations that were never made for her. But confidence found her the moment she stopped apologizing for who she was. In her skin, in her presence, in her truth…she realized she had always been enough.’’ Title: I am enough Size: 3/4 feet Medium: oil and acrylic on canvas 2026 #art #artist #buyart #black by @olatide_amusa

It started with the women—wearing their Afros like quiet rebellion, bold and unfiltered. The men watched, hesitant at first. In barbershops, doubts lingered, but curiosity grew. Some tried it in secret, unsure of how the world would see them. Then a few stepped out—unapologetic. And just like that, what began as observation became adoption. Not just a trend, but a return.
