Allow us to formally introduce ourselves! We are Justin & Shania Oleson the photographers behind Oleson Photography. We are a husband and wife photography team focusing on weddings, couples, families, & more!

Justin and I are based in Soldotna, AK. We’ve been married for almost 2 years, we both grew up in Alaska and met at church. We never intended to get married in the winter in AK at 15 degrees 🥶but wouldn’t change a thing now! It was the best day.

Some of our favorite things…
1. We love cooking!
2. Our take out option will almost always be sushi but we like Mexican too!
3. We love to travel. Most recently we went to the Philippines. Both my husband and I have family in the Philippines 🇵🇭
4. Our weekday jobs involve both of us working in health care🩺
5. Ask shania anything alaska seafood related! (I grew up fishing, selling, and cooking Alaska shrimp, scallops, salmon, etc. so I consider myself a bit picky when it comes to Alaska seafood 🤤)
6. Another passion of Justin’s is music related! He loves playing the drums and specifically musical engineering.
7. Justin is definitely the funnier one out of the two of us! Where I might be more serious with organization Justin balances out with his humor and go-with-the-flow personality. We make every business decision together and are blessed to do this together.

Justin and I have been taking some time off as we soak up all the newborn snuggles with our Mikaia Mae! She is the perfect addition to our family and we are so blessed. Her delivery was a little chaotic, but I am so grateful for God’s protection over both of us.

We took September and October off and we will be back at booking more sessions starting in November. Check out our newest blog https://www.olesonphoto.com/blog/welcoming-baby-2/ by @olesonphoto

Mckean maternity session. So sweet to get to document this family again as they continue to grow their own family 🫶

We aren’t trying to rush away summer but winter weddings are around the corner! 🤩 Justin and I have a few winter weddings under our belt and we also got married in the winter! So we compiled a few helpful tips for all the winter brides out there when it comes to planning your winter wedding in Alaska 😊 first tip below 👇

1. TIMELINE & LIGHTING
Depending on your location in Alaska, the sun may set anywhere between 3:30 PM and 4:30 PM. Because daylight is limited, we recommend planning your wedding earlier in the day to ensure we have as much natural light as possible for your photos.

For couples planning a first look, an early afternoon ceremony—such as a 2:00 PM or 3:00 PM start time—can work well. Most of your couple and wedding party portraits will be completed BEFORE the ceremony while there is still plenty of daylight, leaving family portraits to be taken afterward.

If you are planning a traditional ceremony without a first look, we recommend scheduling your ceremony even earlier. This allows enough time after the ceremony to photograph the couple, wedding party, and family before the sun sets.

The ideal ceremony time will also depend on the length of your ceremony and your overall wedding-day timeline, but planning around the available daylight will help ensure the best possible lighting for your wedding photos.

Tip: Simply google your location and when the sun sets on your wedding date to see what time your ceremony should be. (I.e. “when will the sun set on January 20th, 2027 in Soldotna Alaska”).

Isabella Porsi - Senior 2027
Such a fun session! Her sister got to join in on the shoot as well and we got to take some cute sister pictures🤗 The blues and white in both isabella’s outfits were such a great compliment against the vibrant greens. This was a beautiful gallery to edit and deliver! Looking forward to more 2027 seniors!
