This is a hill I will die on as a one person marketing department:

You are not just a task doer, you are the department head.

You’re not just doing marketing tasks, you are running a marketing department.

That doesn’t come with the title or how many people you boss around. If you’re the only person doing marketing then you are responsible for not only those tasks getting done but how they get done and how the company’s marketing assets are organized.

It’s a different skill to learn, but learning how to manage a department, even when it’s just you, is an important skill to help you thrive, advance your career, and keep from burn out, when you’re the only person running marketing.

You’re not a lone!

I post about how to manage marketing tasks like you’re running a real department when you’re the only marketer at work.

Give me a follow @onepersondept to learn these skills and join a community of solo marketers.

Work expects you to be The Marketing Person and you’re tired of living to-do list to to-do list? I got you friend!

I’m Suzette: a theatre kid turned marketer who has been the only marketing person in most of the small businesses I’ve work for.

It can be a lot of fun being The One, but also a lot of headaches. As a marketer you already have so much on your plate: social media, content creation, email marketing, maintaining the website, and the list never ends.

And you are good at marketing, but no one showed you how to juggle it all at once while no one else in your company knows what SEO stands for.

So I’m using this account to help you thrive as a One Person Marketing Department. Read this course to see how to get started.

Come on a little field day with me as a construction marketer. 🧱👷🏼‍♀️

I get questions all the time about what I do at work as a marketer for a construction company, so here’s a little behind the scenes.

I’ve been doing marketing my whole career, and working in the construction industry for six years. And it’s so much fun.

Growing up I loved watching home renovation shows but never thought of marketing and construction as an option until I was already in my career.

And it’s a different type of marketing but I love it.

So here’s what we’re doing during field day:
-visit 2 projects and capture video and photos
-talk with the team about what we’re doing, challenges they came across and how they solved them, what’s next for the project, and features we are excited for.

The idea is to document the project and educate our clients about what happens during each phase, and show off the company’s hard work.

This is more than “here’s what we did” journal kind of posts. I want to share the questions people are already asking and answer them so they can make the best decisions in their renovation.

Then I go back to the office, type up my notes, edit the videos, and schedule them for social media.

If you work in marketing and construction, I’d love to connect with you. There are not many of us I’m always glad to meet you.

And if you want to know what marketing in construction is like, follow my page @onepersondept and ask me anything ⬇️

Anyone else get the Sunday Scaries?

Your weekends are sacred, so use your time wisely to set up your week for success.

As a department head, and especially if you are the only person in your department, you are going to make thousands of decisions this week. So let’s make a few today, so you don’t even have to think about them later.

Small things like:
-what to eat
-what to wear
-when is my kid’s dentist appointment

Can eat up a lot of brain space and waste time you could be using for more meaning tasks.

So part of your Sunday Reset, make those decisions once, so you are fatigued with them every day.

How do you reset your Sundays to make your week easier?

When you’re the only marketer at work and you are running a one person department, automations are your bestie.

There are so many repetitive, mundane tasks you can easily automate to save you time and money and keep you from burning out.

1. Use @claudeai as a personal assistant and scheduler.
When you’d love to hire an assistant but work doesn’t have the budget, this is what you can do instead. Claude can connect to your emails, canva, colander, and more. It takes a bit to set up but then it can send you reminders and sort through your brain dump in seconds.

2. Use @manychat to automate replying to DMs and engagement. You know all the influencers asking to comment a word and they send you their lead magnet? This is the tool they use and there’s not reason your work can’t use it too.

3. Use a charbot on the company website to answer FAQ. This saves you and the sales team hours so you can focus on generating only the leads that are worth sales’ time.

4. Use a CRM like @hubspot to automate emails

5. Use @mailchimp to automate your email drop funnel.

And if you want to learn how, give me a follow @onepersondept . Everyday I post content that helps one person marketing teams thrive and feel like they are running a real department and not an endless to-do list.

It’s so easy to burnout as the only marketer in the whole company. So this one little time management trick is your new bestie.

Introducing Department Days.

I’ve been using these for years to stay organized, so here’s how to use them.

First things first: you are not just a marketer with a to-do list of tasks to check off. You are running and managing the marketing department. And you have smaller “departments” you are overseeing: social media, email marketing, SEO, etc.

So write down all the tasks that you do on a weekly and monthly basis related to each “departments”.

And then assign each “department” to a day of the week.

So it could look like:
Monday - social media
Tuesday - PR + branding
Wednesday - Blog + website etc

Then schedule tasks and projects and deadlines around those department days.
If something comes up in an email don’t complete that task right away, schedule it for the correct department days and work on it then.

This will help you keep everything in its place and help you from going back and forth and running around all day. Meaning you can do more deep work, leading to more quality and more efficiency.

Let me know how you make it all work and what advice you’d give the solo marketer ⬇️
