Last redhead beast fleye i did was donated to the board for Bob's wake. Wanted one for myself! For some reason Bob like this colorway the best , never asked him why so if anyone knows please enlighten me. Pretty sure Lefty also loved his classic red/white Deceiver color. by @onlyonthefly

Finally got to break away from spending all my spare time configuring, breaking in, setting up and learning the new JB23 CF boat missing out on the early spring fishing. Past 48 hours with limited sleep payed off with some nice beach flyfishing which has always held a special place as I was reminiscing of my first striped bass beach trip back in 1992 which started this journey. A rather large man with a creeper van was present that day and snapped this old photo. #Popovics #popfleyes #neverforgetbobpop @bobpopovics @camfoster_11 and @jrzflyguy always putting in long dark hours. by @onlyonthefly
AI Mode =History has been preserved forever Bob Popovics  (1948–2024) was a legendary saltwater fly fishing innovator, author, and mentor from Seaside Park, New Jersey. Known as the "Leonardo da Vinci of saltwater fly fishing," he revolutionized the sport by developing groundbreaking fly designs and techniques that made saltwater angling more accessible and effective.  Legacy and Contributions Fly Tying Innovation: He is most famous for creating "Pop Fleyes," a family of flies that prioritize profile and movement. His inventions, such as the Surf Candy, Hollow Fleye, Bucktail Deceiver, and The Beast, are standard patterns used globally today. Technological Pioneer: Popovics was a pioneer in using epoxy and silicone in fly tying to create durable, lifelike baitfish imitations. Author: He co-authored two essential books for saltwater tiers: Pop Fleyes: Bob Popovics's Approach to Saltwater Fly Design (2000). Fleye Design: Techniques, Insights, Patterns (2016). Community Leadership: He founded the Atlantic Saltwater Flyrodders and hosted famous weekly fly-tying sessions in his attic, which became a hub for the Northeast fly-fishing community.  Personal Life and Honors Military Service: Bob was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served during the Vietnam War. Restaurateur: He and his wife Alexis owned and operated the Shady Rest Restaurant in Bayville, NJ, for many years. Recent Recognition: In June 2025, the New Jersey Senate passed a measure designating June 1 as "Robert 'Bob' Popovics Day" to honor his contributions to the community and the sport.  Tragic Passing Bob Popovics passed away on November 1, 2024, at the age of 75. His death followed injuries sustained in a hit-and-run accident in Seaside Heights in late September 2024. The driver involved was later charged with driving while intoxicated. by @onlyonthefly
