Thank you to Katherine for sharing her kind words about her recent visit to OVC Smith Lane Animal Hospital with her Golden retriever puppy, Shane.

"The team at OVC Smith Lane Animal Hospital was so warm and friendly during our first visit, helping manage my anxiety and my puppy's first big trip to the veterinarian as we treated a wasp sting last month. The entire team at Smith Lane was helpful, informative and shared what to expect every step of the way. From making the call to arriving at the clinic right when they opened to heading out the door and going home with my girl, I felt supported by a great team committed to my puppy's health and well-being.”

We’re grateful for the opportunity to care for Shane and wish her all the best in her recovery. 🐾🫶 by @ontvetcollege

The Collaborative Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program (CDVMP) is helping #LakeheadU alum and CDVMP student Hope Grootenboer realize her lifelong dream of becoming a veterinarian in the north.

She grew up surrounded by cows, horses, goats, dogs, and cats on her family farm in northern Ontario, where she was always ready to lend her father a helping hand.

Now, she’s thrilled to be starting her second year in the CDVMP program.

The CDVMP is an innovative partnership between Lakehead University and the University of Guelph's Ontario Veterinary College @ontvetcollege launched in 2025 to address northern Ontario’s veterinarian shortage.

“There is so much stress over how few veterinarians there are in the region,” Hope says. “Clinics are struggling to care for animals, and older vets are delaying retirement—that’s why I’m glad that CDVMP grads will help fill this gap.”

Celebrate Black Excellence is THIS weekend, and VIBE is so excited to be joining the @ontariosciencecentre to share our love of veterinary science with you!

Stop by our booth and step into the shoes of a veterinary professional! Learn how to suture and close a wound, brush your pet’s teeth, provide emergency care and CPR to a dog, or identify some of the creepiest zoonotic parasites and diseases (the ones that can affect animals AND you. 🦠🪱😷)

💭 Curious about veterinary medicine? Ask us!
Visit our Ask-a-Vet booth from 11 AM–12 PM or 1–2 PM and bring us all your questions — from how to become a veterinarian, to how we perform surgery on a fish, to why some chicken egg yolks are more orange than others. No question is too weird. 👀

🥚 And come see Dr. Keisha Harris take the stage to explore where our food comes from and show you, step by step, how a chicken makes the egg that ends up on your plate!

Don’t forget to grab a swag bag filled with goodies from our amazing supporters @ontvetcollege , @ovmavets , @oavt_rvts and @cvma.acmv . 🎁

It’ll be a full day of hands-on discovery celebrating the contributions of Black scientists, artists and entrepreneurs in STEAM. ✊🏾🔬🎨

Yesterday, OVC's newest student veterinarians spent the day canoeing, climbing, connecting, and building the teamwork skills that will help them thrive throughout veterinary school and beyond.

From shared challenges to shared laughs, Orientation Camp gave the Class of 2030 an opportunity to build friendships, communication skills, and a strong sense of community from day one.

A huge THANK YOU to @vca_canada for making this experience possible through your continued sponsorship and support of OVC students. Your investment helps prepare future veterinarians to become compassionate, collaborative, and healthy professionals.

We couldn't have done it without you!

This week, OVC Dean Dr. Julia Montgomery had the privilege of welcoming OVC's incoming Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) students as they begin a new chapter in their academic journeys.

This cohort is especially meaningful, as it is the first group of students Dr. Montgomery has welcomed since joining OVC as Dean this June. Drawn from diverse backgrounds and united by a shared commitment to advancing animal, human and environmental health, these students represent the future of veterinary medicine, research, discovery and leadership.

In her welcome message, Dr. Montgomery encouraged students to embrace the opportunities ahead, both inside and outside the classroom. From hands-on learning and groundbreaking research to mentorship, community engagement and lifelong friendships, OVC offers an experience that is both challenging and transformative.

"Starting a new academic year brings with it a unique sense of anticipation and possibility," says Dr. Montgomery. "You are joining a remarkable community of learners, researchers, clinicians and leaders dedicated to making a difference. I encourage you to be curious, build meaningful connections, seek out new opportunities and take pride in your growth along the way. We are thrilled that you are here, and we look forward to supporting your success at OVC and beyond."

Welcome to the Class of #OVC2030 and our new graduate students, and welcome back to our returning DVM and graduate students.
