PANEL ANNOUCEMENT: Today marks the 500th anniversary of the 1526 Rebellion: the first documented rebellion of enslaved African people in North America, which occurred along what is today the coast of Georgia. Join Modibo Kadalie, Andrew Zonneveld, and Janis Coombs Reid from @community_books_ga and @oooabooks for an overview of the historical events surrounding the rebellion, followed by critical reflections and audience discussion. The fact that this remarkable historical anniversary so closely coincides with the 10th anniversary of the Atlanta Radical Book Fair makes this a special discussion indeed. We are looking forward to commemorating this event with y'all! by @oooabooks

Our friend Eusi Kwayana (1925-2026) passed away on Saturday at the age of 101 and six months. An African-Guyanese cultural icon, educator, and organizer, his life was profoundly intertwined with Guyana's independence struggle and post-colonial politics. Kwayana's writings documented the history of Africans in Guyana with special attention to themes of collectivist self-government and mass movement. His *independent* socialist analysis afforded him a perspective that was sought out by many. He participated in the founding of all three of Guyana's major political parties, moving on from one and starting another when he felt each party had lost its way. He was also a mentor to a young Walter Rodney, author of "How Europe Under Developed Africa," and with whom he later co-founded the Working People's Alliance (WPA).

Later in life, Brother Eusi lived here in the United States, in his late wife Tchaiko Kwayana's native Georgia. During his years in the Atlanta area, we were privileged to help republish two of his classic works and facilitated three separate speaking events for him through the @atlantaradicalbookfair at the @aarl_atl

In fact, our publishing house was initially founded because we needed a venue to republish Brother Eusi's book, "The Bauxite Strike and the Old Politics." His work is an intimate and inspirational part of our project of volunteer-based radical book publishing.

We were drawn to "The Bauxite Strike and the Old Politics" for many reasons. It is the story of a 1970s wildcat strike told in real-time from Brother Eusi's point of view, collecting his notes and analysis of events as they unfold. Readers can follow as Kwayana's opinions on the strike shift as he witnesses the remarkable and directly-democratic self organization of Bauxite workers facing a battle on three fronts: an imperialist mining firm, an inactive trade union bureaucracy, and a failing plan to nationalize the industry that demanded workers sacrifice their pensions. The events of the strike had a lasting impact on Kwayana, who, from there forward, championed socialism as a project that emerges from the self-activity of workers themselves, not from state policy.

Easily the most popular book we've ever published is Dr. Modibo Kadalie's "Intimate Direct Democracy: Fort Mose, the Great Dismal Swamp, and the Human Quest for Freedom." The book compares two historical North American maroon communities and aituates them within longstanding traditions of directly democratic Afro-Indigenous political structures. In doing so, Dr. Kadalie challenges how we view history itself. This is a must-read, if you haven't already! Order yours from oooabooks.org, or the link in our bio. 📚 by @oooabooks

A child of the Gullah-Geechee coast, athlete, Vietnam-Era war resistor, revolutionary labor organizer, Black Power activist, taxi driver, radical professor, Pan-Africanist, political scientist, social ecologist, critical historiographer, etc,—Modibo Kadalie's storied background informs his anti-authoritarian political clarity. Kadalie's works emphasize the role of ordinary people's collective self-organization in the combined struggle for human and ecological freedom. If you've never read his works before, consider this a sign!

Yavor Tarinski presents the definitive primer on the politics of direct democracy, surveying the political thought of philosphers like Cornelius Castoriadis, CLR James while also dissecting real-world examples of direct democracy in action from the Baltic, to Latin America, Western Asia, and beyond. This short an accessible volume includes collaborations with two notable social-ecologists: a foreword by Dr. Eleanor Finley, and an interview with the author conducted by Dr. Modibo Kadalie.

Joseph Edwards (born George Meyers, and also known as Fundi, the Caribbean Situationist) was a Jamaican refrigerator mechanic and labor organizer from West Kingston. In 1969, he led a wildcat strike and workers' council at Western Meat Packers in Westmoorelandz and was a major organizer of the Unemployed Workers Council and Independent Trade Union Advisory Council. The first published collection of writings by Joseph Edwards, "Workers' Self-Management in the Caribbean," transforms how we understand class struggle through Edwards's reflections on the events of his life and beyond.
