@cleveland_watkiss makes me stop and listen. His creative choices have that power.

In any context, when Cleveland sings, it’s not just about the notes he hits but those spaces between, the cracks where the emotion lives. Coming from soundsystem culture where pretty much everything is on halftime, Cleveland has an impeccable sense of rhythm and groove, but it’s that mastery of creating and utilising space that truly stands out. His solo voice projects, where he sings, beatboxes, loops, layers, howls and purges are unmatched. His ability to shape words on the fly, contorting them, stretching them, giving them fresh nuance and meaning, puts him on the vocal improv pantheon.

Cleveland's involvement with British jazz goes back to the 80s with the Jazz Warriors, who helped shape much of the scene as you hear it today. Over the years, he's worked with great artists like Stevie Wonder, Courtney Pine, Bob Dylan, and Bjork, showing his versatility and reach across genres. His contributions to music have not gone unnoticed - he’s been awarded a prestigious Ivor Novello Award - and he continues to share knowledge to the next generation as a teacher at Trinity Laban.

I'm first in line for this trio with @kwake.bass and @oren__marshall, the more I think about the quintet with @_ddee and @juliadosreis_viola , the more it makes all the sense in the world. Advance tickets only! Hope to see you next Monday. Peace.

Gifted producer, devastating drummer, Lewisham's finest, @kwake.bass is never far from my thinking when it comes to putting a @mo_notice line up together. Kwake has a deeply nuanced understanding of music composition and rhythm - thats been clear from the jump and more so which each passing project.

Jump on his Con and Kwake, 1000 Kings and Joe Armon Jones collabs if you want to to know or be reminded of his ability to craft textured and completely convincing soundscapes. Kwake has also performed with Lianne La Havas, Mica Levi, Joey Bada$$, Shabaka and Novelist + a notable association with MF Doom RIP, and musical director turns for Sampha and Kae Tempest tours.

Deep pocket and groove, Kwake is also the benchmark for drummers combining live drums with MIDI programming. Still, his contributions extend beyond technical prowess ; he's a community brother with initiatives like his Isolationcy virtual jams evidencing a dedication to collaboration and collective resilience, even when traditional spaces were out of bounds.

Kwake has already made his Moment's Notice mark with that Tony Kofi duo back in 2022. I'm not betting against this April 20th trio with Oren and Cleveland! Got a good feeling about that quintet with Julia and Donna... Tickets from bio, Eventbrite or www.georgenelsonphotography.com 🙏 by @river_recital
