The Orkney Arts Society is organising a Festival for Young Musicians in partnership with OIC Instrumental Music Service and Scottish Young Musicians on Friday 27th and Saturday 28th March at King Street Halls, Kirkwall. Participation is open to school-age musicians – instrumentalists and singers – of all levels from Grade 1 to Grade 8+. Solo and group performers and all styles of music are welcome. Although the Festival will be mainly non-competitive, the adjudicator will select a Senior and Junior Young Musician, with the Senior winner having the opportunity to go forward to the National Final of the Scottish Young Musician at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

This is an exciting opportunity for young musicians to perform in a friendly and supportive environment and to receive helpful feedback from our adjudicator, Jack Tait Westwell. Participants can sign-up via the online entry form before the closing date for entries on Thursday 12 March 2026: https://forms.office.com/e/s8dn9ipFtB by @orkneyarts

Please put a note in your diary for our first event of the year, the international classical guitar duo of Sasha Savaloni and Tim Beattie on Saturday 28 February 2026 at 7:30pm in Stromness Town Hall.

Iranian-Scottish guitarist Sasha Savaloni is winner of two of the most prestigious guitar competitions in Europe: the Sevilla International Guitar Competition and the New Elizabethan Award.

His duo partner, Canadian guitarist Tim Beattie, gained international recognition after winning the Brussels International Guitar Competition. Both players have given concerts across Europe and the UK, performing in some of the most prestigious venues and with leading orchestras. Tim recently made his solo debut at New York’s Carnegie Hall.

For their concert in Stromness Town Hall they will perform a programme of guitar duos and solos spanning 400 years and featuring duos by the Spanish composers Albeniz Sor and Granados alongside solo pieces by the 16th century English composer John Dowland and Errollyn Wallen’s ‘Walking me to work’.
