While we exclusively use natural diamonds for the pieces we make in the shop, we do get requests for lab grown diamonds for custom orders, such as this one. Lab diamonds are just as strong as natural and still possess their telltale beauty. Being more financially and environmentally economical is a major plus not to be overlooked. We loved bringing this ring to life!

Over the last month or so, more and more customers have been coming in seeking bracelets. Hugo and Rodrigo have been answering the call to make sure the shop is filled with new, as well as our classic, designs. Have some gemstones or old jewelry laying around? Bring them by and we can make a piece to order using your own sentimental keepsakes to make it even more special for you ✨

⭐ 9-MONTH ARTIST & ARTWORK SPOTLIGHT ⭐

Hugo Ormachea of Ormachea Jewelry @ormacheajewelry in Ventura came to Taft with his son, Rodrigo Ormachea @rormache, a metalsmith and ceramist, to collaborate. They made some works together and some independently.

One piece in particular by Hugo stood out as embodying this place and the patterns found in the garden: a pendant titled “Taft Amulet” (Copper, 14k Gold, Sterling Silver, Dendritic Quartz, and Sapphire), which features the woody center (seed pod) of a Princess Protea flower.

This deep-pink South African botanical belongs to the Proteaceae family and is a highlight of the monthly Art in Nature tour by Cassandra C. Jones @jpegmountain. It serves as her basis for demonstrating how math manifests in the natural world. Once the fresh flower is dried and removed from the plant, the seeds loosen and fall out, revealing the pod that holds them.

Like a sunflower, the Princess Protea has a critical mission: to be efficient by packing as many seeds as possible into the smallest possible space. It does this while ensuring that every seed receives equal footing and structural support, creating Fibonacci spirals.

The genius of this pattern is that one set of spirals sweeps gently clockwise, while a second, intersecting set sweeps counter-clockwise. They cross over each other smoothly, forming a tight, interlocking mesh of tiny diamonds.

These same mathematical curvatures show up throughout nature: in aloes, seashells, pinecones, pineapples, ram's horns, ocean waves, and even distant galaxies.

Hugo used the woody center to create a wearable piece of art that captures profound intelligence. The Fibonacci pattern points to nature’s primary design philosophy, sustainability: finding the most elegant, energy-efficient solution to propagate and continue the cycle of life.

⏳ 4 Days Remaining to see Rodrigo and Hugo’s installation at Taft Gardens, both inside and outside the Historic Studio. Their exhibition closes July 3rd.

🌿 Taft Gardens is open for Self-Guided Tours, Tuesday through Saturday, by reservation only. Please check the link in our bio to view available time slots.

The May birthstone is emerald! We love working with its rich and vibrant hues, especially when contrasted and highlighted with saturated gold. Its ancient nature resonates with our aesthetic making it one of Hugo and Bertha’s favorite stones. Come see what we have in the shop, or browse loose stones for a custom piece! by @ormacheajewelry
