I have numerous conversations about the intersection of watchmaking and innovation, both here on Instagram and at our gatherings. Collectors consistently pine for something to come along that shows creative thinking and unconventional execution, packaged up in something that isn’t what you find on every wrist.

We like offset dials, jump hours, intricate calendar complications, and unique approaches to displaying what is essentially conveyed to us by every device we stare at constantly throughout our modern days. It’s no wonder, then, that something unusual tends to catch our eyes and makes us look longer than we otherwise would. It’s also not often that someone creates something for the collector that isn’t simply another timepiece.

@k_chaykin is a name that, if you’re in the know, creates playful, colorful, and wonderful pieces that often toy with the concept of telling time. Again, he’s pushed the envelope even further by adding something to the catalog that offers something fun to look at during the board meeting or at your next Horology Republic event: a set of cufflinks that display the day of the week, powered by their own individual movements.

Scroll through the next few photos and I’ll let the master explain his newest creation.

A very special thanks to @oseregin, of Konstantin Chaykin’s PR team for including us in their insider release with these wonderful shots and detailed description.

The calendar is one of watchmaking’s most practical complications. It complements the time display and helps us navigate the rhythm of everyday life, even in the age of digital devices. In a conventional watch, the movement controls the change of indication: at a prescribed moment, energy from the gear train is transmitted to the mechanism that advances the date or day of the week.

In the Master of Days cufflinks, the wearer takes the place of the watch movement. Fastening a cufflink on a shirt cuff activates the mechanism, advancing the pointer to the next position. The kinematic chain extends beyond the case: wearer and accessory form a unique symbiotic system.

I’ve seen plenty of watches described as tributes to a city, but the Bosphorus Joker interests me more for the people who made it happen

Salon Kantièm worked with Konstantin Chaykin on a 50-piece edition for Istanbul, unveiled at Contemporary Istanbul rather than at a watch fair

The turquoise dial is the obvious nod to the Bosphorus; underneath it is the Joker concept that made Chaykin so recognisable

Two rotating eyes indicate the hours and minutes, and the moonphase sits in the mouth

Those indications give the watch an expression that changes as time passes, which is still such a strange and brilliant way to make a mechanical watch feel alive. Seeing it presented alongside Chaykin’s paintings also made sense to me

His interest in mechanical forms clearly goes beyond the watches themselves. I’m glad this came through a Turkish retailer, and I’m particularly glad its first showing was here

I’d like Istanbul to be a place where projects like this begin, rather than just another stop on their tour and thank you to @turkishwatchguy and @salonkantiem for making it happen taken in Istanbul, Turkey by @watchdreamersbr

Before this watch touched a real wrist, it was already on one in a video game.

In Blood on Crystal, the final Atomic Heart expansion, Professor Lebedev wears it. Now Konstantin Chaykin has made it real.

The Twins are the game’s robot ballerinas. They’re over two metres tall and move with the grace of a Bolshoi dancer, because a Bolshoi dancer is exactly who they were modelled on. Hence the Swan Lake.

On the dial, the moon is her face and changes over a full lunar month. Two rubies tell the hours and minutes. Chaykin’s logo sits at her neck like a pendant.

Last year he gave us Botticelli’s Venus. This year, a Soviet robot. Same idea: a watch can be a portrait.

69 pieces of each. Titanium, 40mm.

Left Twin or Right Twin?

NEW ANNOUNCEMENT.
@k_chaykin × @atomicheart_official

Two robot ballerinas from a video game put them on a dial. Only 69 of each Twin will be made.

In the game, the Twins are Professor Sechenov's bodyguards, over 2 metres tall and moving like Bolshoi ballerinas. Now they tell the time.

The Left Twin is a black silhouette on a red dial, with guilloché folded like an open fan. This is the one I'd pick.

The Right Twin is a silvery figure on graphite, wearing a gold guilloché cardigan. Cooler, darker and a little more unsettling.

The moon phase sits where her face should be. It takes 29.5 days to go through its cycle, under a ruby star and a golden braid.

The watch was even in the game before it was on anyone's wrist. You can spot it on Professor Lebedev in Blood on Crystal.

Left Twin or Right Twin? Tell me which one you'd wear, then send this to the mate who'd choose without thinking.

Under my lens today the @k_chaykin SC02C 🚀

There are watches inspired by space. And then there are watches actually developed for it.

Since 2018, Konstantin Chaykin has been working alongside Roscosmos on a research programme with one rather ambitious goal: creating a mechanical chronograph capable of operating during extravehicular activity, outside the International Space Station.

And they didn’t just simulate it.

Experimental versions of the project have taken part in four actual spacewalks, starting in 2021 with Oleg Novitsky, followed by another mission later that year, one with Oleg Artemyev in 2022, and most recently on May 27th 2026 with Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergey Mikaev.

Each mission provided real-world data, allowing Chaykin to improve the watch generation after generation.

The result is the SC02C.

Its 44mm steel case was engineered to operate in high vacuum, with a specially mounted sapphire designed to withstand extreme conditions. Inside, an antimagnetic cover protects the movement, while the watch itself has undergone centrifuge, vibration, impact, thermal-cycle and solar-simulation testing.

Even the rounded surfaces of the case serve a purpose: reducing the risk of damaging a spacesuit.

Inside is the K.20-5, based on the legendary Poljot 3133 but extensively reworked by Chaykin, including 60 components manufactured in-house, a 12-hour chronograph counter, hacking seconds and additional shock protection.

Only 28 pieces of the SC02C will be made.

And on the last slide, you can see one of the experimental chronographs where it was designed to be: strapped over an Orlan-MKS spacesuit, outside the ISS.

When Konstantin Chaykin says tested in outer space, he means it quite literally. 🚀 taken in Geneva Switzerland by @watchdreamersbr

🚨NEW RELEASE 🚨⬇️ Konstantin Chaykin SC02C Space Chronograph

Originally developed as a professional mechanical instrument tested during spacewalks, this chronograph is the result of an official partnership with @roscosmosofficial. The relationship dates back to 2018, with ongoing research and development continuing in 2021, 2022 and 2026, each iteration bringing further refinements to the chronograph.

That experience has now resulted in a civilian edition, presented in stainless steel with a 44mm case and limited to just 28 pieces. The intention is for feedback from those who wear it to continue informing the ongoing research project, ensuring the development remains grounded in real world use.

As you would expect, the design follows its purpose, with every element considered for use in space. Legibility is paramount, with luminescence applied to the hands, markers and bezel, while a red tipped hour hand makes reading the 12 hour scale on the rotating bezel easier. An anti-magnetic cover protects the movement, while the sapphire crystal is secured using a 'dovetail' system designed to better withstand pressure. The watch is also water resistant to 10 ATM. With such emphasis placed on functionality and usability, it is unsurprising that the quality control measures are exceptionally rigorous.

Powering the chronograph is the legendary Poljot 3133, a reliable base calibre that has been heavily modified to meet the specific demands of space. Although the movement remains concealed beneath the case back, it has nevertheless received an exemplary level of finishing (as you would expect from @k_chaykin demonstrating that the attention to detail extends beyond what can be seen.

You do not open a Dostoevsky novel for the plot on its surface. Reading Notes from Underground, Crime and Punishment or The Idiot, what truly strikes you is that merciless depth descending into the thinnest, most invisible layers of the human soul. This giant of Russian literature knew how to hide an entire universe beneath the smallest gesture. Today, another master from the same soil does exactly this with metal: Konstantin Chaykin. taken in Luxemburgo - Europa by @watchdreamersbr
