POSTS STORIES REELS

Today, I successfully defended my PhD.

It’s yet to sink in. 4 years of coordinated chaos. Driven by a promise I made to mom and dad.

Doing it through grief and juggling several other responsibilities.

I didn’t come out unscathed. The story will be told. But for now, let me get some sleep.

Thank you to the most amazing supervisor, Professor Beverley Essue, my committee members, Prof. Abi Sriharan and Prof. Emerita Whitney Berta, and my loving family, genuine friends and everyone who truly stood by me.

Thank you Jesus.
God is Great.

It was a privilege and an honor hosting this year’s Gown Awards of the University of Toronto African Alumni Association. See you next year at our tenth anniversary.

I enjoy the fact that through my work, I get to contribute to meaningful efforts that can ultimately help save lives on our roads.

This time around, my awesome colleague @mannymatata and I, representing @roadsafetyngos, joined editors and journalists from across Africa at the African Road Safety Media Forum in #Abuja, where we contributed to discussions shaping Africa’s first road safety media guidelines, which will help strengthen road safety reporting across the continent.

We also shared how the Alliance is contributing to efforts to make the African Road Safety Charter a practical accountability tool, and how NGOs and the media can work together to track commitments, document progress, and keep road safety on the public agenda. It was great connecting with others working to make this happen across Africa.

Thanks to @thecjid and @who for creating the space for these important conversations. by @otuto_chukwu

In a full circle moment, I am returning to The Gown: African Scholars Awards, not as a recipient but as the host.

Winning this award in 2024 still lives fresh in my memory and the gratitude will remain forever.

Now coming in to host it even leaves me with more gratitude to be part of something that honors African excellence in global stages.

I look forward to meeting the recipients and learning more about the amazing work they are doing.

"Gold is a precious material and... children are our most precious treasures..."

The advocacy for children with cancer never stops. This childhood cancer awareness month, I want to remind you that there are thousands of children in Nigeria and across Africa who are still dying from one of the most treatable forms of cancer.

Vulnerable, weak, tired, and facing a bleak future, these children lack access to the lifesaving medicines they need to survive. It is not that these medicines are difficult to make available; rather, the challenge lies in political will and weak priority-setting within countries and across bilateral and multilateral cooperation needed to support these children.

Having led the development of an implementation framework to support improved access to childhood cancer medicines in low- and middle-income countries such as Nigeria (presented at the World Cancer Congress in Geneva and published in a peer-reviewed journal), my firsthand experience suggests that frameworks to support access to cancer medicines for these children are not lacking.

What we have not seen enough of is compassionate leadership from international organizations, political leadership from countries that have the power to act, and the empathy and commitment to justice that these children deserve.

My research has taken me on so many journeys. Some of them to physical locations, and some to emotional heights I wish I didn’t have to get to.

This is one of the many emotional ones.
I hope to tell more of these stories; and I hope these stories lead to change.
