OUT NOW! Comment “please” and I’ll send you the link to my new book, You Can’t Please Everyone 🌟

One day, you’ll become more exhausted by pretending than you are afraid of disappointing people.

It might happen on a random evening, during an ordinary conversation, or in a moment so small you almost miss it.

You might catch yourself about to force a laugh at a joke you don’t find funny, nod along with an opinion that makes your skin crawl, or shrink yourself into something more palatable. And suddenly, you realize how exhausting it is to maintain relationships that no longer align.

When you stop the act and retire your people-pleasing tendencies, those who benefited from the mask will feel uncomfortable, even threatened. They’ll call you “different,” “changed,” “too much,” as if you’ve regressed. What they really mean is that you’ve stopped being convenient or easy to shape. They can no longer take from you like they used to.

Authenticity often means outgrowing approval, artificial harmony, and relationships sustained by performance. It will hurt. But you must let it. The ache is part of the return to your heart.

Because how will people see you if you’re performing someone you’re not? How will anyone genuinely love someone they’ve never fully met?
Deep connection requires truth.

You don’t need to keep translating yourself for people committed to misunderstanding you. You don’t need to endlessly explain your boundaries, feelings, or existence as though you’re requesting permission to take up space.

You’re allowed to evolve, be sensitive, fierce, uncertain, complex, and still worthy of love and respect.

The right relationships won’t require you to continually shrink, distort, or abandon yourself to preserve them.

Of course, authenticity doesn’t excuse harmful behavior or remove personal responsibility. Being yourself still asks for self-awareness, humility, and accountability.

But if you’ve spent your life becoming who everyone else needed you to be, perhaps the next chapter is finding out who you are without the performance.

That’s why I wrote You Can’t Please Everyone.
