Romanian is one of the few major Romance languages spoken in Eastern Europe, alongside its more geographically distant relatives, Italian, French, Spanish, and Portuguese. The language developed from Latin following the Roman conquest of Dacia in 106 AD. Despite centuries of Slavic, Hungarian, and Ottoman influence, Romanian retained its Latin roots. Today, Romanian is spoken primarily in Romania and neighboring Moldova, which officially recognized Romanian as its state language in 2023. Following the fall of communism in 1989 and Romania's entry into the European Union in 2007, millions of Romanians moved abroad, establishing large communities in Italy, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Interestingly, the UK looks relatively unchanged on this map, despite having a substantial Romanian-speaking population. According to the 2021 census, around 472,000 people in England and Wales spoke Romanian as their main language, making it the second most common non-English main language after Polish. I AM SO EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE MY COMMITMENT TO CONTINUE MY ACADEMIC AND ATHLETIC CAREER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON!!! First, I want to thank my parents for everything they have done to help me reach this point. Thank you for the countless early mornings, long drives, endless race weekends, and sacrifices you have made so I could chase my dreams. Thank you for always believing in me, even during the moments when I doubted myself, and for being my biggest supporters through every high and low. None of this would have been possible without your unconditional love, encouragement, and support. To my coaches, thank you for pushing me to become not only a better runner but also a better person. Thank you for seeing potential in me, challenging me to step outside my comfort zone, and teaching me the importance of hard work, consistency, and trusting the process. To my teammates and friends, thank you for making this journey so special. From the endless miles and hard workouts to the laughs, memories, and encouragement along the way, you have made even the hardest days enjoyable. The friendships and memories I’ve made mean more to me than any race or time ever could. Lastly, a huge thank-you to Coach Solinsky, Coach Watson, and Coach Rogers for believing in me and giving me the incredible opportunity to compete at the next level. I can’t wait for the next four years and everything that comes with being a Badger! #gobadgers #xc #committed
